I have windows 98 and internet on cable. I have tried releasing and renewing my IP but it gives me the same one. Is tehre a way to chnag it?

Your IP address is assigned by your cable company, and you're stuck with it. I'm sure you could get a static IP address from them for an additional charge.

why do you think you need to change your ip address? maybe there's another way to do whatever it is you're trying to do.

Yes, I know static IPs don't change. He said he needed a different IP than the one he had; if he wants to always be able to know for certain what his IP is, he could get a static address. Maybe that didn't make much sense the first time, sorry!

it sounds like he already has a static ip,
a call to the cable company should solve the problem, they can assign you a new ip,
possibly for a fee.

Hey, on the topic of static IP's

If you have Win 98, Win Me, & file & print sharing activated... chances are someone with an IP Scanner can see the entire contents of some or all of your drives.
Not only see it... but take it, plant
viruses, delete stuff.

Port 139 Netbios - close it

Turn off your file & print sharing
-if that's possible for you-

Use a good firewall.
