Subject: I Need More Cache In Dos |
Comment: Hello Computing.net` I Need Some Help, My Mobo Has 1028kb Of Onboard Cache That I Dont See Enough Of. Its Booting Up Specifying 1028kb External Cache. But For Some Strange Reson The System Memory Is Set At 640kb And Is Around 568kb Free In Dos And W98. Using Mem.exe I Noticed MSDOS Is Using Up Over 400 And It Seems Like I Cant Do Anything To Get It Back. About 80kb Of The 640 Is Always In Use In Both Dos And Windows Leaving Me With Around 560kb. How Do I Get The Other Hindering 400 Free? Recently I Programed The Bios With The Driver Downloaded From The Motherboard Manufactures Just To See If There Was A Glitch Causing The Memory To Clock Out At 640. It Was Obvious After Messing With It Boot After Boot, There Isnt Anything Wrong With The Bios Version. Before That Ive Created A Boot Disk With A Himem String To Unleash Some Cache In Dos. The Result I Was Hoping For Was About 650kb At Least. But Clean Boots Are Still Under 600kb. No Matter Where, Even F8 Safe Mode Command Prompt Is Bested Under 600kb. I Need More Than 620 To Run Certain Dos Apps. Help! Thanks.

Reply: (edit)U r confusing 2 issues - conventional memory and cache. If ur problem is that u need a very high conventional memory - 600+, then suggest that u use the following statements in config.sys device=c:\windows\himem.sys device=c:\windows\emm386.exe noems dos=high, umb and any other device driver statements should have devicehigh= instead of device=. Also prefix all command statements in autoexec.bat with LH to load everything high. This gives u a very high conventional memory for running dos programs. Another alternative to do this automatically: If u can manage to get memmaker program from dos 6.22, I suggest that you configure msdos.sys file to have bootGUI=0, reboot to dos prompt and run memmaker. It optimizes your conventional memory taking care of all possible conflicts. (There are about 3 -4 files associated with memmaker.exe which are needed for running the program - u can identify them easily by name)
