Subject: i need help with stupid hp scanner
Comment:

everytime I boot my computer, before windows 98 starts, there is a black screen saying that windows cant find a file called hpsjvxd.vxd and after pressing any key, i have to wait a couple minutes or so until it goes away. i know its from the hp scanner i uninstalled but i checked on the software and there was no uninstall program. is there a way to get rid of this? can i just edit the system.ini file so it doesn't need the stupid file any way? i have the hpsjvxd.vxd file also. can i just place it in a certain place and it will go away? thanks for all your suggestions and help.

Firstly, go to system configuration utility to see what's starting at boot up. To do this go to start, run and type msconfig then press ok. Go across to the start up tab and knock the tick off any reference to your scanner. You will then need to restart your pc. This will stop it starting at boot.

There is often an MPR problem with HP scanners. MPR stands for Multiple Provider Router and this handles network services and resource management. There is also a known incompatibility with HP Scanjet Button Manager. Unfortunately, you’re going to have to disable it to resolve the issue.

If it is like my scanner and many others I have seen you should be able to go to:
start/programs/hp scanner/uninstall. Then you can do an unistall from there. It may also appear in your add remove programs in the control panel. I have seen some hardware show up there. My modem is in there to be uninstalled. So check out those two places. Ok?
Hope this helped.

Are you running the latest drivers for it? If not, then either go to the HP site or to Drive Guide.

Has this started happening since installing the scanner software, or could it be that you've installed some other software that has corrupted your scanner configuration. If you have the software on disk, then it may be worth trying to re-install over the top of your existing installation. Post back how you get on.

2 thoughts. Try reinstalling it and then looking into: c:\program files\hp scanner\unistall. Or looking into the registry somewhere for the settings for it. Caroline could give you a better idea of where to start looking in there. I try and stay away from the registry myself. I have a tendency to crash every time I touch it, so ask Caroline if there could be anything in there.

T/Caroline; would a registry cleaner be a solution? They often detect and delete/fix bad entry's in the registry...
To CJ;
Maybe installing the scanner again and uninstalling it the propper way will resolve this problem? When Windows asks wether it should delete any shared files, just leave them there! You might have deleted a wrong file, or uninstalled the scanner the wrong way? (Hey, I'm new here and frankly I couldn't find enough info in the original post to be of any more help... sorry!)
But after installing the scanner again, check all the mentioned possibilities before you start uninstalling it again... good luck!

It would be easier to place the file (you said you have it) in your windows system file. Then windows will stop asking for it!
