Opera without java is 11MB.All the adds slowed it down.IE 5.0 was faster but still too big.

http://browsers.evolt.org/index.cfm/dir/opera/16bit/

That site has some older versions of opera. 2.12 being the oldest. You will have to sacrifice quality for speed.

IE 5 is a fairly recent browser in the grand scheme of things. I had "problems" running IE 4 under windows 95 with 64mb of ram on a 133mhz pentium. Installing ie4 slowed my computer way down.

the Offbyone browser is only 409k in size and can be run from a floppy or CD.
You might be interested in some of the apps at
www.tinyapps.org.
The link to the OffbyOne browser at 'tinyapps' seems dead but a bit of a google search turned up an available download from Tucows

Click on uniweb browser in the l/h side of the page to download .

Browse the web or your computer files with this fast, FREE
easy to use System Browser. Powerful features, not useless ones.
Uniweb is based off Internet Explorer (TM) and uses the same
control sets and calls. The difference is Uniweb if faster,
smaller, doesnt crash, works when others do not, does not have
to be installed, and has several powerful power user options
that are not found in other applications, such as "Enter Dos
Command" (Use address bar as a DOS prompt), "Dos Shell", &
ability to open links with new or same window (meaning any
shortcut or link on the browser can be opened in the same or
new window, helpful when doing file utilities). Quick link
icons can be set to open custom folders, 'My computer', and
favorites lists. Uniweb's homepage can be set to anything you
desire, including 'My Computer'. This means you can use Uniweb
as a standard system browser replacement as well a web browser.
Simple design, easy to use, attractive, customizable interface.
