I don't want an Icon.

Somehow, the ACCESORIES folder has become an Icon now.

It used to be at START/ PROGRAMS/ routine where I could find the seldom used programs.

The Drag and Drop routine does not work in reverse. So, how do I put it back into the START/ PROGRAMS/ array once again?

Accesories no longer shows in the start menu? Accesories is a folder with all the various tools inside of it. To recreate it would require that you add a flder to the prgram group, then rename it accessories, then one by one add the tools that were under it. The tools vay depending on what you originally had in there.

A simpler fix would be to perform a registry restore to a time prior to the move. To do that:
Reboot and hit F8 while booting. Select command prompt. Type command\scanreg/restore and hit enter. Highlight a date that is prior to the change. Hit enter and you should be in business.

I tried doing the Registry restore to the previous day. Didn't change anything. It remains the same. I had thought it to be a quick fix but was not.

I may ahve to go to route One as you explained, to which grumble, grumble,....

When did you convert the list to an icon? One thing you could try would be to go to control panel> add/remove programs> add/remove windows components> look for the accessories list and add the ones you want. Windows may then place them back on the start menu. You will need to have your Win98 CD handy.

Apparently you moved the accessories folder from windows\start menu\programs to windows\desktop.

Open explorer (right click on START and choose Explore) and open Programs. Then drag the Accessories folder icon from the desktop back into Programs. I just tried it on mine and it worked fine. If that doesn't work for you then maybe I'm not quite understanding the problem.

Just to clarify that IS Windows Explorer, correct?
Good find. I thought there should be a way to replace it but I guess it was too late in the day. Hope Coos Bay is still reading the threads. Your way is much easier. I wasn't sure if changing the installed accesories would result in a start menu entry or not.

Nope, Dave...

That routine was about the second or third thing I tried. Once I toch the Icon the whole Programs/start menu pulldown goes away. Blinks off. Looks as if only one thing can be selected at a time here. I am thus only peermitted to move the icon around the desktop area, and not into any sub-menu.

Am on California time here, so we get delays in writing and responding due to sleep at night.

When you first insert a file into a folder it will not take the correct place. Close the folder and reopen to see if it there or scroll to the bottom to look for it immediately.

Did you try the method I suggested to add windows components? If nothing else it will show you what components are available in that catagory. Win98 does not install all options by default. There is a + next to the entry. Expand that entry to see the entire list. Some have maybe 12 or so choices.

Yeah, anything in the windows\start menu\programs folder shows up when you go to START---PROGRAMS.

I noticed if you drag the icon (from the desktop) down to START and then up to PROGRAMS to place it back there you only get a shortcut. You have to open explorer in order to move the folder itself.

You might want to go to FIND FILES OR FOLDERS and do a search for the accessories folder. Once you find it you can probably open two explorer boxes and drag it from where it is (in the first box) to where it should be (in the second box).

If all else fails you can probably use dos to copy it to where it should be.

Hi Count

I asked DAVE that question because the behavior we describes is typical of WinXP and I know I sometimes forget which forum I am in. Thought maybe dave did too. I am currently using XP but any solutions I suggested apply to 98.

Count, you are one of the old win98 gurus aren't you? Perhaps you have some incite on an easy fix for Coos Bay, if this is still an issue.

Hi Wm "Coos Bay Lumber", OtheHill, DAVEINCAPS, hi everyone

OtheHill, I was only making a bad joke, sorry about that.

"Count, you are... ...aren't you?"
Yes, it's definitely me... nah, I don't deserve that much credit. If one among others, without mentioning all of their names and there is no offense meant, is to be called a win98 guru it's DAVEINCAPS. :-)

As for now, I can only suggest to Wm to follow DAVEINCAPS his #8 and especially starting from where it reads: "You might want..."

To continue on DAVEINCAPS his #8, as I understand it the Accessories folder is now located on the Desktop. So I would open one Windows Explorer window (#1) pointing to Desktop, all the way at the top, and a second Windows Explorer window (#2) pointing to C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs. Drag and drop/cut and paste or copy and paste to be safe the Accessories folder from window #1 to windows #2.

I do hope I have the path for window #2 correct, I have multiple accounts set up on this old dinosaur running Win98 and therefor the default path for my Start Menu is: C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\The Count\Start Menu\Programs

I just posted the other day about these misunderstandings. I don't understand the popularity of text messaging. I would much rather speak with someone on the phone than text them on the same phone. Usually no misunderstandings when communicating verbally. The method we use here, while necessay, allows for misinterpretation. Sure couldn't afford to speak to GB, France, Australia, India, etc.

Count, BTW I know DAVEINCAPS knows his stuff. I was merely trying to draw you into the thread. You have gotten a little lazy on us lately. Who do you think you are, Derek? That was lame humor BTW.

Yeah, I'm using 98. I've got ME and XP machines but rarely use them and am too lazy to hook them up to the internet.

I didn't have any problems moving the accessories folder back and forth between the desktop and its proper location. That's why I thought maybe there was something else going on. I did notice that when moving it back to windows\start menu\programs you have to make sure to drag it to a wide open space and not try to squeeze it between existing entries. The first time I tried it ended up in my AOL folder.

From how vaguely the problem is worded it would appear that Accessories was a once hidden folder from the Windows Me or Windows XP start menu.

It would appear that "Wm" of "Coos Bay Lumber" accessed some application (Notepad?) in this folder. Now the once invisible folder has now made its regular appearance.

Am I correct, Wm? And you now want that folder to become invisible as it once was before you used something from that folder.

Well, the best way is to leave it alone. Eventually it will disappear.

Much to do about nothing.

I think you have it wrong. Coos Bay dragged the Accessories entry on the Start menu to the desktop. It no longer shows in the start menu. He wants it back there.
