Lilliana, i have the same problem. Before I can even get to Windows, the screen says I have a FreeTel/SYSTEM.INI error, and I need to uninstall Freetel. Problem is, I have no idea how to do this, so I am stuck with that stupid message, and like Brian said, I havr to hot a key to get past it. Anyone know how to uninstall this beast?

Freetel is a ISP (but not a very good one)
FreeTel Communications,
from http://www.freetel.com
if you don't use them you can remove the file's
Freetel will not show in ADD/REMOVE so you may
have deleted the folder from the HDD you now
need to update the system.ini file
Go to RUN type sysedit
click system.ini
scroll down till you see[386Enh]
device=C:\FREETEL\freetel1.vxd
device=C:\FREETEL\freetel2.vxd
ebios=*ebios
woafont=dosapp.fon
mouse=*vmouse, msmouse.vxd
device=*dynapagenow add REM in front of device=
save on exit and reboot

Hello all... I'm posting to this form to inquire about Freetel itself . Its seems its been off line now for days . I'm wondering if Freetel has finally pulled the plug ,or if they're having server problems.Does anybody have an answer .

what is wrong with freete?
it says cannot make connection, and i am connected, or behind a firewall. and i am not behind a fire wall. ot freetel is down. which is it?

Freetel has been down for a week or more. This is not just a local problem, but international. I have tried to find the corporate office number in Los gatos, Calif and they dont respond. I notice all the referrences on the net go to a directory of some sort. I have not a clue whats with freetel. Is it defunct, or just down again !!!!!!

I've been having a devil of a time trying to clean uninstall Freetel. Yes, they seem to have gone belly-up, with their website being wiped clean as of July 4, so they are no help. All the old message board msgs about not being able to uninstall it are now dead links. No available info that I can see, and neither Microsoft nor the tech forums I've found are any more addressing the Freetel uninstall dilemma. It's not uninstallable by Windows, and doesn't seem to be easily undone from Windows 98 via SYS.INI or registry, although at startup is an error message, looking for device file/vxd's.
Anyone have the fix? Please write direct to me, as I'll likely forget where I am at the moment... been searching the net for hours looking for any help with this issue!
Thanks,
Michael

I tried to delete freetel and had so many problems with my computer because it erased more programs than just the freetel. I had to reinstall freetel just to get my start up to work properly. Can someone give me the steps to delete this. Sorry I every installed it.

For all of you people that are having problems with error messages after deleting the Freetel program, the solution is as follows... First, you must understand that if you delete all of the main program files, your computer will still be trying to use driver files that the freetel program used. Since the design of Freetel basically sucked and the programmers never left any way for the average PC user to uninstall the program and clean up after itself, then your computer still thinks that it is using Freetel driver files, even if you have deleted them and it tries to load them with each reboot of the computer. This is what is causing the messages about the FREETEL1.vxd and the FREETEL2.vxd files or messages about the system.ini file. When you installed the Freetel program, the setup program of Freetel changed your system.ini file by adding a couple of commands to a duplicate copy and then renamed your original system.ini file. Your original system.ini file would of had the name changed to something such as system.sav or system.old
You have one of 2 choices... You can use your original system.ini file or you can go into the altered system.ini file and get rid of just 2 commands that load the 2 virtual device drivers on startup, which causes the error message. It was suggested on a previous posting on just one way to accomplish this. There are only actually 2 commands that you need to erase from the system.ini file to solve the error message problem or instead of erasing them you can type REM in front of the two commands (with one space in between REM and the commands). There are also several different ways to get at your system.ini file to edit it and erase those commands. Basically, the system.ini file is nothing more than a text file. However, without it, you will not have a windows operating system that works at all. The best way to open the system.ini file so that you can edit it in windows 95/98 is to go to START, then RUN and type in SYSEDIT and press the enter key. You can also get to this file from the WINDOWS EXPLORER program and finding the system.ini file and double-clicking on it. The system.ini file will probably be located in your windows folder. You can also get to this file fron MSDOS by clicking on START, PROGRAMS, then MSDOS PROMPT. Once in MSDOS, you simply type EDIT and press enter. You can then use your mouse to click on FILE, then OPEN and you will see where you can select the system.ini file to open. No matter which way you choose to get at the system.ini file, you must get rid of the two lines that refer to the Freetel virtual device drivers or place the capital letters of REM in front of the commands. Once you get the system.ini file open and are staring at the commands, you simply scroll down the screen until you come to what looks like this [386 Enh] Directly below this you will see the two lines that you need to get rid of by using your backspace key and they look like this..DEVICE=C:\FREETEL\freetel1.vxd
DEVICE=C:\FREETEL\freetel2.vxdOnce you have either deleted these 2 lines or placed the letter of REM in front of them, then you simply click on SAVE and the changes that you have made will be saved. The next thing you do is to restart your computer. Since the system.ini file will no longer have references to those two driver files, your computer will not try to load them any longer and the error messages will stop.
Before you rid the system.ini file of those commands, first delete the Freetel folder or delete all of the Freetel files. I have seen this same problem many times concerning the "ancient" Freetel program and have had to fix it for people too many times. As soon as most people discover that they have no way to uninstall Freetel, then they delete all of the Freetel files thinking that they have gotten rid of the program. Indeed, they have gotten rid of the program but what lots of folks don't know is that when Freetel was installed the system.ini file was altered.As far as why Freetel is no longer functioning, I have no knowledge as to why. I only know that their server is no longer functioning as well as their website seems to be gone, where they used to market their program.
Editing the system.ini file is easy but just make sure that you only mess with those two commands. Happy computing :)
