Subject: I CAN'T TAKE THE FREEZING ANYMORE!!!!!!!!!!
Comment:

Can someone PLEASE! HELP ME. My computer(windows 95) has been freezing almost every five minutes. I don't know a lot about computers, but I do have over 1 GB of free space. the computer freezes constantly and when it restarts, scan disk does an automatic check which most of the time reveals no problems. it usually said that it has detected bytes of data which may be useless, and asks me to delete or save it. the freezing occurs while on Netscape 4.0, MS Works, AOL Press, or anything. When it freezes the mouse disappears, and the computer will not respond. I can't take it anymore. what is the problem????????/

You didn't mention how much memory, or RAM is on your machine. The hard drive space is okay, but Windows needs lots of memory also.
You should have at least 32Megs of ram, more is better. I also suspect some sort of behind the scene program is running, like auto defrag or a virus scanning program constantly checking the system. While you are at the desktop, hit Ctrl+Alt+Del just once and see what is running in the pop-up box. Click "End Task" for all except Systray and Explorer, then see if the problem happens again, if not, then one of the programs you disabled is causing it.

You might look in your Start Up folder (right click and explore the "start" button, then programs, then startup)-delete some or all of the shortcuts there.
Also, check the status of all your hardware in device manager, are there any conflicts?

Win 95 will work w/ 16Mb or 8Mb.
It needs at least 50 MB of virtual memory.
But, win95 will hang(freeze) if files are corrupted or when there are registry problems. Sad to say, scandisk does not check the registry.
Registry error.
It occurs when you delete a progam that you installed. It creates a key in the registry. now if you deleted files, the key will still try to find it. But it's not there, then the computer gets nuts. It freezes.
Corrupt files.
Files that you deleted or partly deleted or changed. Some programs share files. When you delete the program w/ the shared files, the other program goes nuts. Then it freezes.

THE REMEDY
You need to delete windows(C:\Windows) all the way. Delete it from DOS. Install a fresh Win95 then install all the applications you need. This is the easiest way.

Try limiting you vcache
Find and run your Sysedit
click on your C:\windows\system.Ini
look for this line
[vcache]

If not there add it like this anywhere

[vcache]
MinFileCache=4096
MaxFileCache=4096

this will limit your vcache to 4megs
I Fixed the size of my virtual memory
like this:
First Defragment then
let me specify my own settings
min 120
max 120
which almost double my Ram
I use my Nuts&bolts to move the WIN386.SWP
file to the front of my harddrive.
You might also want to get something to clean your registy
I use Regclean which is free
and CleanSweep which you can get a Demo
And Nuts&Bolts which you can get a Demo

Clean up your startup folder and don't
let program put shortcuts there.
I have my Antivirus and my Crashguard
and two other progams that do not take
up much memory.
Also Cleansweep can show you mismatch dll
I use First Aid too.
I would not delete windows unless
it does not work anymore.

USE Safe-Mode
While making adjustments.
Might be easier.

Just a couple of things:
First of all, Nuts and bolts is a nice program that will do many things (probably more than you ever need), but if you decide to try it, Your'e stuck with it which is fine if you like it. It replaces a lot of Windows system files and if you uninstall it, it doesn't put them back right and you will probably HAVE to reload Windows again. I would definately try a registry cleaner and The Task Manager (CTRL + ALT + DEL) and the start menu ideas from above. If none of that works, Completely reformat your hard drive and reinstall windows. If you don't have a lot of stuff on your drive that you can't live without, you might be better off just doing that anyway. If your registry is all messed up and you have alot of broken Shorcuts and unlinked files and what-not
You might improve performance greatly.

I have the same problem. Hit CTRL ALT DELETE twice really quick. Then when the close program dialog comes up hit cancel. The program should start working again.

I know this doesn't solve anything, but if you were rebooting your computer everytime it froze this maybe a better soloution.

I would go out and buy Firstaid and cleansweep. Firstaid is great for troubleshooting and fixing most problems. Works for me.

I'm trying to resolve a system hang problem whenever I run a thorough scandisk or Norton Disk Doctor on my secondary hard drive. The system normally will run fine, and the freeze happens on an unused part of the disk. I've removed everything from memory. I'm running Win98 Version 2. I'm running two physical hard drives each running FAT32 partitions. I'm really at a loss. My Norton System Works Version 2.0 doesn't report any disk errors and scandisks run fine except when the thorough test is used. HELP!!!!

Might have it checked for an overheating CPU.It might need a larger cpu fan/heatsink.Also be careful with what alot of people tell you about these troubleshooting utilities, alot of them are garbage and make your system operate worse especially crash guards that tend to "be oversensitive" and cause more problems.
The point is take it to a professional and have it checked out, besides being a software conflict,it could be a hardware problem.

i had the same problem.. and agree with one gentleman. check your cpu for overheating by going into the cmos and underclocking your cpu. if the locking stops get a super heat sink and bump it up back to original speed.
