Subject: I can't install Win 98 SE on my laptop
Comment:

Background and type of computer:
I have a laptop 400mhz with internal cd- rom but NO floppy-drive.

The problem:
I've formatted the FAT32 partition and want to install Win 98 SE. Last time I did it I borrowed a Win 98 SE-cd from a friend of mine. When I asked him this time he doesn't have it anymore and I can't boot the installation from the CD. The BIOS supports booting from CD-rom 'cause that's what I did when I had his CD but it isn't booting from my own Win 98 SE-cd. And as I said, there is no floppy so I can't boot it up from a floppy. My friend told me to make the CD bootable. How do I do that?

You need to find a friend with a CDRW drive. Have him/her make a bootable CD and then copy the Win98 folder from a Win98 install CD to it.

OR, "sys" the hd so it boots, and then construct proper autoexc.bat and config sys toload the dos mode cd drivers. Go to the manufacturer's website, first, to see if they have these. On my thinkpads, the dos cd drivers can be downloaded in a file that MAKES an install disc for the drivers. You can take a bootable floppy, run the install disc to install the drivers to the bootable floppy. When you do that the floppy will boot the machine and load the cd drivers.

Ya, Ya, I know, swappable. SO, Now that you have your floppy, Just boot WITH the floppy, do a "sys c:" from the floppy, and then copy everything from the floppy to the hd. When you get done, you should have a bootable hd that loads the cd drivers.
