Subject: I can't get safe mode to start

Comment: After pressing f8 and choosing safe mode it says "windows is bypassing startup" then it says microsoft inc and some years. After that I'm left with an empty A: prompt. What do I do now. When my labtop broke down before an old friend fixed it for me but I found all these new icons on my c: drive. So I decided to move it all into one folder and now my lab doesn't work. I need to get to safe mode so I can put the files back. Can anyone tell me another way so they can be in one place. Thanks in advance

Reply: (edit)"Unknown Icons" And you moved them?? Do you have an Win Installation disk? Did you make a Reset disk? (Nortons Ghost etc)? Why did you move them to a folder? You need to post more details. I've never heard of safemode not loading, you can try: Boot to the command prompt type: "windows/safemode" Hit the enter key

Reply: (edit)I just didn't want all the icons lying around when I double click my c: drive . I know some of the icons, I think they're log.sys, config.sys or something like that. I think they were deleted when I removed some old games. I just wanted them somewhere else and not on that drive. typing windows/safemode at the A: didn't work please help

Reply: (edit)It shouldn't be leaving you at the a: prompt unless you're booting from a floppy, which I don't think you are. At the a: prompt type c: to get to the c: drive and then type win to restart windows. See if that does it. Otherwise at the c: prompt type "type autoexec.bat" and see if there's a line there directing it to the a: drive.

Reply: (edit)Without knowing exactly what you moved and where it's going to be kinda tough to straighten out. I would suggest running windows setup.

Reply: (edit)I don't think you can go to safe mode when booting from a floppy. At the a: prompt type "sys c:" to transfer the system files to the HD. Make sure the boot disk is the same version as the OS on your computer.

Reply: (edit)Hey it's me again. Hey daveincaps thanks for your advice but it didn't fully work. I turned on my lab (didn't push f8) and at the a: prompt I typed sys c: . After that it said the files were transfered and the next line down there was an empty A: prompt. What do I do now to get into safe mode (yes my boot disk is the same os). Thanks :)

Reply: (edit)Scratch that last message of mine. This time when I booted up I didn't need the disk. But after pressing f8 and choosing safe mode I'm left with an empty C: prompt. What do I do from here.

Reply: (edit)Sorry it didn't work but I'm not sure what I have is a normal C: prompt. It looks like this C:\> . Is it the same though. If not what does it mean. There's a space between win and /d:m right (that's how I typed it). Can someone please help me. Thanks again

Reply: (edit)Your C prompt is OK .Sorry my method didn't work .Try pressing F5 when booting or typing win or exit at the C prompt.Or get into your windows\desktop directory in DOS and work from there. This may involve a lot of learning for you,do you want to spend the time?Or would you rather take it to a shop, tell them you have a software problem and get a quote from a few shops it should cost about $30

Reply: (edit)Are you sure windows is installed on your HD? Next time you boot from the HD, type "cd windows" at the c: prompt. If you get "invalid directory" you probably don't have windows on the drive. If it goes to the windows directory type "win" at the prompt.

Reply: (edit)I think windows is on my hd because when I typed "cd windows" it gave me this C:\WINDOWS>. But when I typed win it says "HIMEM.SYS is missing. Make sure the file is in your windows directory. How do I fix it? If it's fixed will I then be able to go to safe mode?

Reply: (edit)Check your whole hard drive to see you didn't move it somewhere when you arranged your desktop. If it's not there you'll need your windows CD or copy it from someone else's computer,or a bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com may have it but I'm not sure

Reply: (edit)It's whoknows again. I've been doing more research and read on some web pages that sometimes that himem thing could be a false message (I found himem.sys on my windows dir). Some others said I should boot from a floppy and type sys c: (to boot from a floppy all you REALLY do is shove it in right, sorry for be such a dum dum). After I did that I went back to the windows directory and typed "win". This time it didn't give me the himem message (yeah) but it still didn't work. A screen showed up for about 3 seconds with a lot of typing on it all I could read was XMS cache and then a blue screen popped up.It read. VFAT initialization Failed A device resource required by VFAT is not present or is unavailable VFAT can not continue loading. System halted. It froze or something because ctrl+alt+del didn't work. I rebooted (with no floppy this time) and went back to the C:\WINDOWS> prompt and typed win, it gave me the himem message again. So I rebooted again with the floppy and did the sys c: thing. No himem error but got the VFAT error. Why do I have to have the floppy in everytime if I already transfered my files (sys C:). What is VFAT and how do I fixed this. I just need to get to my desktop and I'll be very happy. Thanks a million+infinity P.S. COMPUTERS COME FROM HELL!!!

Reply: (edit)I'm sorry I really have no clue on how to do that. I think my labtop has a built in win95 cd-rom because when I make new changes and apply them it always says "found source win95 cd-rom" even though there's nothing in my cd-rom drive. I also have a win95 floppy installation disk but I cant used that because when they ask me to attach my cdrom drive that can't happen. On my labtop you can only have a floppy drive on or a cd drive on, not both at the same time(because you have to swap them, stupid Dell Latitude model). How do I go about reinstalling windows.

Reply: (edit)Forget my last message. I found out what the files I moved were. When I was at the c prompt I typed dir and found out the folder I moved them to. The icons are 1.setuplog.txt 2.schannel.dll 3.setuplog.old 4.logo.sys 5.config.dos 6.config.cdr 7.scandisk.log 8.dcc.log 9.config.win 10.install.log 11.dlr.log 12.config.sys 13.netlog.txt 14.autoexec.dos 15.autoexec.bat 16.autoexec.cdr 17.aspi32~1 LNK 18.ms-dos~1 PIF originally they were just on my c drive (when I double clicked the drive it used to be lying around in there). So how do I extract these files from the folder back to the c: drive. I'm sure if they get back their my pc can boot in safe mode (or at all). Please help me on this. I thank you

Reply: (edit)You seem to be having the same problem as the person in this post. You might check out the advice here: http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/117339.html When you get the message "found source win95 cd rom" even though you don't have a disk in, it's probably because the cab files are on the hard drive. You might try this: just type setup at the c: prompt. It might give "invalid command or file name" or it might start the setup process. If that doesn't work I'd suggest you reformat the HD and reinstall windows as I recommended in the 117339 post.

Reply: (edit)From a DOS prompt use the copy command i.e. c:\\ copy filename.ext c:\\ destinationfile that will copy them back to where you want them.As for a false missing file try typing exit instead of win I don't know why it works but it did for me when I was told I was missing win.com{when it really wasn't missing

Reply: (edit)Copying the file will put a copy of it in the directory you specify it will remain there when you restart. So go into the directory the files are in and type copy fil ename c:\ ,do this one by one until they have been copied to c:\ ,your root directory.

Reply: (edit)Thank you Jim. Your advice seems to be the only one that works. When I rebooted by turning off the power I had the same problems but when I used clrl+alt+del it worked better. I sucessfully copied all my files. When I rebooted the win95 sign was up for more than 2 sec. now (like 15 sec longer). But then it gave me "no cdrom drive was found" error (I think that's because I had my floppy in the bay at that time). I switched drives and rebooted. Now it gave me "drive E:=msd001 unit 0", that mean it detects my cd-rom drive right (which is called drive:e). Under that was an empty c:prompt so I went to the windows directory and typed win (I was just wondering what does "win" do). It continue to load for another 10 sec. Then It gave me a "VFAT Initialazation Failed" error followed by "system halted". How can I fix this. Thanks Jim. You're the best :)
