Dear Sir,
I had a widows 98 in my pc (P3,500mhtz,65mb ram,6.2 hard disk, Dell brand).Last week I upgrade the system to win2000, after a while a found that my pc became very slow and I think its becuase of the win2000 need more resouce from my pc. So, I decided to returen to my win98,(actualy I formated my pc and after that I installed win2000, its not upgrade) . when I decided to retuen to win98 I try to format my hard again becuase win2000 have a spceial file system deffernt from win32. Usually I make a cold booting from startup flooby and after that I format and install the win98 from the cd. But I found that MY PC DOSNT ACCEPT THE FORMAT COMMAND .. and its give me a massge of ((( bad command or file name))) ??/!!!
So, I connect my hard to another pc and format it from the windows and after that attached it again to my pc.BUT ITS STILL DOSNT ACCEPT THE FORMAT COMMAND .. :=((
Can you pls kindly tell me why ??
I think its virus action ??
Best regards

Did you run Fdisk and delete the partitions and create new before formatting?
Also at the A:\>type fdisk \mbr.

Hi all,
Mesich... some miswriting: fdisk /mbr (not backslash I guess)
Isn't the hard disk formated NTFS? so, you won't be able to run any Dos command!!!
Destroy any partition... fdisk or even delpart.exe

Yes, delete the partition with DELPART and repartition with fdisk.

When using fdisk, delete the non-dos partition first. Then install active dos partition. Then format. Or use a disk utility to do a low level format and then fdisk and format.

A true low Level Format (LLF) would not be advisable on a current/recent drive; not at all recommneded - probably would wreck the drive. What is generally referred to as an LLF is more a Mid Level Format (MLF); this writes zeros to the drive and sets it back to factory gate state - more or less. Each manufacturer has its own version; and it is advisable to use the one for your drive and not another manufacturer's.

Fdisk will only remove Primary ntfs; if you have it in Extended areas then you can delete it using W2K setup\create/delete partitions option. You can delete all partitions this way, then close out and reconfigure/format drive for '98 using Fdisk/format utils via '98 boot-disk..
You can also use the delpart.exe util referred to already in above reply; it deletes just about any partition - permanently. It's run from a DOS (a:>\) prompt; afterwhich you use Fdisk/format utils to reconfigure/format the drive for '98.
