I need help. I can’t connect to the Internet. Please help me, thanks a lot. I receive the following message when I try to connect to the the Internet,(my modem is internal).

“Dial-Up Networking was unable to complete the connection.

Error: 630
The modem is not responding properly. Please verify that the modem is plugged in to the computer and to the telephone line.
If the problem persists, please select 'More Help' button to start the Windows 98 Modem Troubleshooter.”

Before I connect to the Internet, I have verified that my modem is responding. I checked: Control Panel>Modems>Diagnostics (tab)>COM2 (where I installed my modem)>More Info…
And a window is showing the information.

But when I try to connect the Internet, I receive that message (see above). And when I then check the modem-response (Control Panel>Modems>Diagnostics (tab)>COM (where I installed my modem)>More Info…), then I receive another window FIRST:
“OpenComm Port already open”

After closing that window (by pressing the OK-button), the window which should contain the information (about the modem etc) appears, but it does so without the information.

I am completely lost as to what to do, I have installed drivers and reinstalled drivers. Thanks a lot!

Try this,
turn your pc off for half an hour then retry, sometimes this will work. If not then you have a conflict, perhaps you have set two things up on the same port. Another reason for the problem could be spyware dialers. You may have become infected with a dialer and it has your modem open. Get a good spyware scanner and scan your pc (you can get some good ones here http://www.anti-trojan.org )

Had it been working & something happened to cause this error message? Have you made any changes (software, hardware, or file deletions) that may have brought this on?

Try booting to safe mode...then go to device manager...check what's listed under Modem. If you have more than one entry...remove them ALL. Reboot & see if Windows reinstalls the modem properly. Make sure to have your modem driver disk handy

...there is no spoon...

Is this a dial-up?
if so < Control Panel > < Modems. >
Click your modem. Check the properties.
change the port if you have to .

check to make sure your phone line is
working correctly. Unplug the line from
the back of your cpu and hook a phone up.
make sure your getting a dial tone.

Check your dialing properties also. Make
sure that your on tone and not pulse.

if you have another phone available you
could dial that number using the phone
dialer -under- < Start > < Programs >
< Accessories > < Communications >
just to check if it's dailing out.

Could be a network thing.

I had a simular problem on my Dad's PII. I moved his modem from one PCI slot to another to make room for a new USB card. The unit has soft power and I did it while it was plugged in. Well, after I moved the modem I would get OpenComm Port already open. I tried every suggestion I could fine on the net to fix it to no avail. Therefore I reinstalled windows 2000 pro, but then the modem was saying it couldn't find a dial tone. To make a long story short I went to Walley World and bought a new modem. Now all works fine. Moral of the story, try a new modem. They're under $30.

God Bless
