Okay... so here's the deal... I am screwed on the "win95 boot disk/CDrom oh god someone please help me" deal... but I am hoping, if I am a bit creative about my begging... I will get a copy Emailed to me as a suprize gift from some WONDERFUL guru out there. *WINK WINK*
It all started like this... I got a computer in 1998... it's all been downhill from there... I have gone through a couple computers... alright, I'll be honest here, several... I feel better!
At this point, I know just enough to be dangerous... I KNOW aliens are hovering over my house, zapping my hard drives. I KNOW gremlins live inside this box! I KNOW I have done EVERYTHING any human could possibly do without sending my cash to Bill Gates! (I figure he has enough anyway... and lets face it, NO ONE in their right mind uses Win95 anymore right!?)
Anyway... honestly... Here's the the honest truth about what happened to my bootdisk...
Back in... hmmmm 1995, I made this comment, sorta half joking, that Bill Gates named his company after one of his body parts... (Micro and soft)
Then... (*mildly seriously*) I accidentally said out loud, when I really just meant to think it: "I think Bill Gates is the third anti-christ Nastradamus was talking about"
SUDDENLY, WHAMMO... every computer I touch, dies... Every boot disk... had a meltdown!
I have tried everything from *gently* tapping the side of the tower, to torching floppies in sacrifice to the gods of cyberspace... But got no where. POUT *SIGH*
So here I am... on a site... on a borrowed computer... begging for a boot disk from some (Oh boy I hope) wonderful stranger who is going to restore my faith in the human race by sending it to me.... thus helping me get this borrowed computer back to it's owner before the *Bill Gates curse* strikes it also!
PALEEZE... people... if ever a lady were a desprite damsle in distress (Valium please) It would be me.
I run a site online, where I help adopted people and birth families find each other... FREE, (Which explains why I can't afford to line Bill's pockets by buying a copy of it. Or buy a new computer for that matter, one that might actually have enough brain power to run something like.. oh... I'd settle for Win98!)
So... (On knees now, getting ready to break into a verse or two of "Wind benieth my wings") would somewonderful person.... help me.

Here is the boot disk I use and I've had no problems:
ftp://ftp.micronpc.com/Support/Bootdisks/98BOT10A.exe
Put a floppy in your drive and type 98bot10a.exe a:
This will format the drive and make it a boot disk.

Lia Maria, that's a handy link that Dave provided, but it sounds like you should go with the 95bot245.exe instead since your system is Win95. As well, there are at least 2 major versions of Win95 - I'm pretty sure you can't use one version to boot the other. I suppose this isn't a good time to remind you to keep a few backup boot disks on hand. *g*
Hope this helps, let us know how it goes.;-\

Wait , wait ........ let me get in here. I have several sites here you should consider.
Right now I'll just post the sites while I go and review them again for you because I haven't been there in awhile and I want to advise you on the best one possible. By the way you're very funny.Bootdisks for win 95/98:

What the hell..........so are you !
Tried your suggestions on a couple of occasions ......too taxing.
Hey Lia ..... how did it go! vbg

Yeah, I'd thought that I'd detected a subtle change in some of your posts. *g*

Hi Gentlemen...
(Checking quickly just in case I morphed) nope... not a troll... *GIGGLE*...
Seriously... I am just getting back online now... I didn't realize I would get an answer so quickly, so O went to bed.
I am off to try to locate the disk on one of them thar links...
Should I have mentioned that, when I put the old boot disk in (Before it passed away) I got to the part where I was wanting to format the C: drive and it said, (Something like) "You can't do that to this drive, it's not programmed that way. DUH"?
Is this important??? It's one of those, I swear, gremlin things! I can only get the black screen of death (DOS prompts) Windows has completely evaporated...
This computer I am borrowing is a Win98, so I thought I would try that (As I can make a boot disk here for Win98) But that is when I got the *can't format the disk silly" message.. so I thought, "Okilie Dokilie, it HAD to have Win95..." But that boot disk... was... not happy anymore.
I think I should mention here, that when I first got that computer, when it started up, I would get a screen that said, "Error: type 1"... I spent WEEKS typing "1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1'" Then I thought, Alrightie then, "ONE ONE ONE ONE ONE ONE" Then, I had an epiphany... they *meant* "Error: Of the VARIETY 1" (Why didn't they just say that!" I have no idea that that is all about.
The HD on it is a 1gig. (Though I have a 127mg and a 200 mg that someone was tossing and I thought, "You never know, I might need that someday" Yeah I know, junk it all right!... But I can't... it's all I got. It says I have 39mg memory.... I know that sounds impossibly odd... but that is what it says.
I have gone to the site that makes the CDdrive, and downloaded the drivers (I think) But WOW... Alright... really I am just lost.
I had done a dump and load before... on my sisters computer... I wiped out the HD (On purpose) Then loaded Win98 from boot disk and CD installation, NO PROBLEM... but, when I had to do it on this old IBM-a-sauras Rex, it didn't take... it couldn't find the CD drive... wouldn't let me format the C: drive... oh man... what makes these things crash in the first place! (Asside from the fact that Bill hates me???)
Anyway, I am off to get the win95 boot disk... I think/hope... the CD's I have for that say "Win95 companion"... I hope that doesn't mean I need the regular CD also!

Alrightie...
I DL'ed the win95 boot disk from somewhere called, "Win95bot245.exe" and the computer said, "Not a valid system disk, remove the disk"
HELP! *Gasping for breath as I sink s l o w l y to the bottom*!

You need to run the program not just place it on the disk. Try www.bootdisk.com and get a disk with CD support. It honestly doesn't matter what disk you use, just be sure if you have windows 95 prior to 95B to not let it format the disk as FAT32 or allow big disk support. I've used DOS 5, windows98 and windows95 original diskettes to load a windows95B system. It really doesn't matter, except you should have a 95B or higher to format a disk larger than 2GB to one partition

I see... alright... here's where I am at...
I downloaded win95b boot disk, (I had win95 companion- who is no friend of mine!)
I opened it, and put it on a disk... I took it out of this computer, and shoved it into that one (the broken one), this is what happens:
Power up with disk in.
screan says, "IBM PS/Value Point"
It counts memory in the top left of the screen, "39something KB OK"
BEEP BEEP.
"The following errors: 162 configuration change occorured. Click Enter to run config utility or ESC to continue"Here I tried both things... thinking, okay, I will set EVERYTHING back to factory settings, cool beans. Save and quit utility. Didn't help, still get the warning when I bootup.
So then I said, "Screw it, I will escape and continue! Hit Esc key and get this:
BEEP BEEP
Then I hear the A: drive *thinking*
Then I get a blinking cursor... and that's where I live now... blinking cursor on a blank black screen of death. If I hit esc again, I get a new beep sound... and if I hit other keys randomly, they don't print on the screen... oh wait... I hear the A: drive thinking again... more/longer thinking.... sounds like loading thinking... but it's not doing anything... just blinking cursor (I would curse at it... *EVIL GRIN* if I thought that would help!)
It's still crunching away over there... hmmmm, interesting.. it *sounds* good.... it's just not showing me anything. (Alrightie, I checked, the screen is totally plugged into everything correctly.)
Usually when it's thinking about stuff it tells you it's thinking, and tells you to wait for it.... but it's not telling me anything.
Hmmmm it's done thinking (About 5 mintues worth) and I am back to the blank screen blinking cursor no thinking going on thing.
Anyone have ICQ and too much time on their hands who would like to talk me through this? I promiss it will be fun... Email me for my number.
Love and Light,
Lia"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." - Thomas Alva Edison

Hmmmm Interesting footnote... I took out the 127mg IBM original HD, put in the 1gig spare I had gotten from a guru's garbage, and I lost the part about the configuration crappola... now I just get the blank screen... is this good?
Love and Light,
Lia

Okay... so I got to thinking... maybe it's the disk I put the boot stuff on... so I loaded the 98 boot disk, everything was fine, ran scan check on that disk, 6 bad clusters with info on them... sooooo...
I am checking another disk, and then I will try to DL the boot for '95 again.
Okay.. here we are... I have a GREAT disk, this thing is AWESOME, absolutely NO bad nothing on here!
I stick it in... and it gets all worked up about the CD drive, It skipped the screen where I can choose to load with or without CD support, and went straight to the "no CD now what" prompt.
Soooooooo.... no CD, now what??? I know someone up there said to make sure I get a boot that has CD support, but NONE of them said anything about CD support, so I just grabbed the one that seemed closest to the OS I am/was running (Win95 companion).
I am stuck... I will check back as often as I can tonight... and I am willing to stay up till dawn to get this done if someone is in a different time zone, or they are just vampires.

Hi Lia Mari
I checked in on this thread a few hours ago,and boy, I Am confused now. These various hard drives that you possess; the 1 Gb, the 127 Mb and the 200 Mb - are any of them set up with an Operating System? Did you have Windows or DOS at one time; or are you TRYING to install Windows for the 1st time? I guess what I'm asking is Did Things Work at one time? Still trying to figure this out, but I think I need some clarity. It sounds like more than just a bad boot disk.;-o

HI... I just checked in to see if anyone was around... I hope you are still here J-boy!
Here's the deal... It came with the 127IMB, I came into the 1gig so I switched them Because the 127 was starting in safe mode and I didn't know how to reload windows at the time... so I put the 1gig in, and it was running fine... till now.
It started, and wasn't running right, so I thought, "Hey, I know how to do this now." so I did... well, I tried.
The 127 wasn't working right either, so when I stuck that in (just to check) it wouldn't load right either....
What it boils down to, I am fairly certain, is that for whatever reason, the drivers for the CD are not loading??? Everything seems to be working fine (now that I have a boot disk without errors and bas sectors) except that it comes up with a thingie saying it's not finding the CD drive...
So I am thinking (I know I shouldn't, but here it goes) I think... that I am just having a hard time with the CD drivers, without the CD drive, it can't get anywhere near loading windows.
Without windows, I don't know how to load the CD drivers!
Ummmm I think that is it... if you are interested in discussing this (and holding my hand and walking me through it) Email me, I am going to keep the computer running while I work on some jewelry tonight, and I will click reload and check the Email every few minutes till.... lets say... if I haven't gotten any offers, Midnight.
Love and Light,
Lia"Pray, n:. To ask that the laws of the universe be annulled in behalf of a single petitioner confessedly unworthy." - Ambrose Bierce

Oh, nearly forgot,
The 127 worked, but was dying, starting only in safe mode, so I tried to reload windows... it's not going because of the CD thing.
the 200, I can't say for sure... far as I know, it was working when it came out of the other computer, before I grabbed it from the guru garbage, (Just checked it, without a boot disk in the A: drive, it showed a really cool DOS mode graphic telling me to put a disk in the A: drive. so something is not right with that one either.)
The 1gig was working.. great... till it crashed... and I have been (mainly) working on getting that one running, but at this point, I tried loading windows on all three, and keep getting the CD drive drivers can't be located whatever thingie.
HOpe this helps you help me...
Sorry to be so confusing... but life is a mirror I guess... what I am giving out, Confusion) I am getting back... *GRIN*
Love and Light,
Lia

This is what happens when I boot...
It goes directly into dos mode.... I pick, or it does it automatically sometimes (honestly it does!) WITH CD support.
Then it thinks on that a minute... and says this:
CDROM device driver for IDE (Four channels supported)
(C) Copyright Oak Technologies inc. 1993-1996
Driver version: V340
Device name: Banana
No drives found, aborting installationDevice driver not found "Banana"
No valid CDROM device drivers selected
A:_

Sorry folks... this is honestly weird I know... and very confusing...
But, what I just said, is what happens if I boot with the win95B disk.
When I boot with the '98 disk, it doesn't do that... well it does, then it goes into a song and dance a mile long that I can't ever read quickly enough (and I can't see a way to back it up to reread it) but the general jist of that is:
ERROR: PCI read configuration failior
(Bunch of DOS crap about ides and and DOS)
"Diagnostic tools were successfully loaded onto C Drive"
Device driver not found: "MSCD001"
No vaild CDROM drivers selected"There... does that help me??? *GRINDING TEETH* I am so NOT an A type personality... the details drive me up a wall! I like it when you plug it in, and it works. LOL

Lia,
The diagnostics shouldn't load to the C drive so you have something else "ALSO" going on here. Do you know how to enter the bios?
wcr3d

ummmmm, I did know... but I think I forgot, I know how to... no I don't... *BLUSH*

Yeah, the one floppy boot is loading the wrong (banana!!) Cd driver. Will the 'puter boot without a floppy? (that would be a GOOD thing) Need the right Cd driver - any idea who made that CD Drive? Why the diagnostic tools are loading seems very odd. You haven't had the cover off? PCI failure could (maybe) be a loose card (circuit board).
(If you hit the "pause" button, you can read those screens full of techno babble - then hit the "any" key to resume);-\

Did I *somehow* do this to myself??? All this time I have been blaming Bill Gates... but... could I have done it???

No, I get stuck on the IBM screen without a disk.

Did you use the boot disk from reponse 1. This is what I use and it works great. Save the file to your hard drive and type 98bot10a.exe a: from the location you save the file to.
This will format the disk in drive a and make it bootable. Once you use the boot disk to boot, a menu should come up asking which type of cdrom drive you have.
How old is this computer system? Can it support FAT32? Is the cdrom connected to the ide connection or is it an older type that connects to the sound card?

Hi All...
Well, I gave up at 5am... and I am starting back in now.... it turned out, the 1gig HD was missing jumper pins, and won't work. Not sure what happened, it WAS working... maybe, when I switched them, I broke them off, they were apparently just dangling on the bottom on the circut card.
Anyway, we are making progress on the 212mg HD now... We got it cleared off, and now I have to try to uncompressit/format it with drvspace... which I have to put on the boot disk. I also might have to add the CD drivers onto the boot disk (or a seperate one) to get the CD drive running again.....
Dave...
We gave up (wcr3d and I, with J-boy backing me up in Email) at 5am , turned out the HD was broken, which explains some of my problems... so far, everything he has been telling me has worked, so I am off now to do the list he left me with this morning.
This system is.. OLD some parts say 1992 on them, most say 1993-1996... '96 being the oldest.
It couldn't format the C: drive because the C drive was not working properly. It wouldn't find anything, because the C drive was not working, and it wouldn't load windows, cause the C: drive was not working.
I never would have gotten anywhere without the WONDERFUL people here... Especially wcr3d and J-boy... wcr3d who was willing to stay up all night working on this with me on ICQ!
I am grateful for everyone's help and advice... and I will keep you all posted. As I progress through this.

Hi all...
Just a quickie note to say what I have done...
I have formatted the HD!!! With a heapin' helpin' of...errr... help... from someone named Bob from here.
I am now DL'ing the disks for Win95... we are thinking, if I get windows running, I can install the Cd driver from windows. (good thinkin' eh'!) If windows doesn't auto- install it on it's way into the box.
This is really going to work! I am so excited!

Hi Everyone...
I hit another glitch last night... I was actually starting to install windows, and the 212mg HD is compressed, win95 setup says something like this: Your HD is compressed, use drvspace. or the disk-cache utility is an issue, remove it.
I tried using drvspace, I loaded the files onto a disk, but then, the computer says I need windows to run that tool.
I have no idea about this disk-chache thing... anyone here know anything about this???
I am so close! The win95 setup is starting! so close! But when it starts checking out it's environment, it gets all worked up about this comression/ disk-cache thing.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Windows setup: Compressed volume or disk-cache utility error:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Issue:
When attempting to run setup you receive the following error "Setup found a compressed volume or a disk-cache utility on your computer. Quit setup & check your compressed volume with your compression software or remove the disk-cache utility. Then run setup again."
Cause:
This issue can be caused by one of the following reasons:
Hard drive has been compressed.
Hard drive has non supported fat such as HPFS, NTFS or FAT32.
Hard drive has DDO.
Solution:Hard drive has been compressed:
If the computer hard disk drive has been compressed in the past by any utility this compression software must be removed or configured to allow Windows to write to it. If you wish to remove the compression from the hard disk drive follow the below steps (being aware this will erase all of your information on the hard drive).
Boot from a bootable floppy diskette.
At the A:\> type:
fdisk
In fdisk choose the option to display partition information (option 4).
Determine the type of system currently setup on the hard disk drive. If you receive No partition defined skip to step 8.
Once the system has been determined press Esc
Once at the fdisk main menu choose the option to delete the partition or logical DOS drive (option 3).
Choose option 1 to delete the primary partition if your system is FAT16 or FAT32. If your system was unknown or a Non-DOS partition choose option 4 to delete Non-DOS partition.
Once the partition has been deleted or is no longer present choose Create DOS partition or Logical DOS drive (option 1).
Choose Create Primary DOS partition (option 1) and create a primary partition on the hard disk drive. Once created press Esc until back at the prompt A:\>. Once at the prompt reboot the computer.
Once back at the prompt after rebooting the computer type:
format c:
After the hard disk drive has been formatted successfully reboot the computer and install Windows.
Hard drive has non supported FAT such as HPFS, NTFS or FAT32:The version of Windows you may be installing may or may not support the current FAT structure of your hard disk drive from a previous operating system and believe that this FAT is a compressed portion of your hard drive to resolve this issue follow the below steps (being aware this will erase all of your information on the hard drive).
Boot from a bootable floppy diskette.
At the A:\> type:
fdisk
In fdisk choose the option to display partition information (option 4).
Determine the type of system currently setup on the hard disk drive. If you receive No partition defined skip to step 8.

Hard drive has DDO:If you have installed your hard disk drive utilizing a diskette commonly referred to as a DDO (Disk Drive Overlay) unless this software is loaded into memory the computer may not see the hard disk drive using a bootable diskette.
To determine if you are using a DDO and to utilize that DDO with a bootable diskette reboot the computer without any bootable diskette or CD in the computer. As the computer is booting you should receive a message "Press *key sequence* to boot from a bootable diskette" this *key sequence* can vary depending upon the type of DDO installed on the computer. An example of such a key sequence is CTRL + ESC. If you do not see this message when your computer is booting it is likely that a DDO is not installed on the computer.
Also are you using a drive overlay program such as EZ drive?

How can I bypass the "compressed volume" bootup problem?
Dear Help Station,
I started my new PC with Windows 98 Startup disk but I want to install Win 95. It gives me the following error when installing Win 95:
"setup has detected a compressed volume on your computer ... please remove the compressed volume or the disk-cache utility and run set up again."What do I need to do to install Win 95? - Ayaz Khan
The Startup disk you used comes from a computer that has a compressed C drive. You need to copy the Startup disk and change the Config.sys file on the copy to remove the DriveSpace command line.

Hi Dave...
WOW, thanx.... it's taken me this long to work through all the directions up there!
I was able to get around the error (thank you VERY much) But in the end, I keep getting stuck now, when I get to the 3rd disk it says it had trouble reading it... so I re-format that disk, and copy it again, that didn't work... so I got a new disk, copied it to the new disk, still got stuck there.
The CD player is still not working, I have the driver disk for the CD, but I am not sure how to install the drivers without windows already in the the thing!
Soooooo I have nearly given up on this HD.. I have a call into the local computer company, asking if they have a small old HD that works that was removed from a system getting a bigger one, (Thinking maybe I could get one pretty cheap) and I am waiting for a call back...
So everything is on hold right now in the hopes of getting a little bit bigger HD. I am not going to work on this HD until I know if I have to... HOpefully, I will hear back from them today, and they will have something for me cheap.
Thanx to everyone... I will post again, new thread most likely, if I have to work on this HD, or if I have any troubles with the new-to-me HD (If they have one)
