Hi, I have a HP Pavillion 7270 computer with the HP 15" Multimedia Display Monitor (Model D3857A). Doing regular things, my monitor is fine, but when I try to play games (Riven, Phantsmagoria I and II, and now X-Files) my screen is so dark I can barely see the game to play it. Today I called the tech. number for Riven game and was told it was my monitor and nothing I could ever do would help with any of these games. Is it true that I am just stuck and there is no way to do anything to brighten my screen. I would appreciate any advice, etc. I can get. Is there a place on the web where someone has a Personal Webpage about HP computers and monitors, from other people who own them. Thanks, Darlene

Darlene,
I found this posted at the Riven suport site, hope it helps:
Screen goes black when launching Riven (Windows 95)

When Riven launches, Direct-Draw adjusts the bit-depth of the desktop settings. However, this may cause problems for some video cards. If your system goes black upon launch, please set the desktop settings to 640x480 16-bit color before launching the game.

To set the desktop settings:

Right Mouse-click on the desktop.
Select Properties.
Select the Settings Tab.
Under Color Palette, select 16-bit.
Under Desktop Area , select 640 x 480.
Click Restart if prompted to do so. Otherwise, select OK.
