I am installing a HP Laserjet 6L printer onto a Compaq Prolinea 575e desktop. The PC has 48mb memory, and a 10Gb disk drive and is running Windows 95.

My problem is that once the software is installed, whenever I try and print, it invariably hangs the PC (about 75% of the time). I have downloaded the latest drivers from HP and also upgraded the cable to an IEEE 1284 standard as this is the type cable specified with the printer documentation.

It appears to me that the PC has trouble communicating with the printer and is waiting for a response from the printer, as if I install the printer as a HP laserjet 4l, which doesn't monitor the printer status, it works ok, but won't print graphic work correctly.

Any suggections?

under the start menu/printers right click the hp printer and check the port that it is trying to print to. It should be listed as lpt1 or printer port.

1. In your BIOS settings, configure the parallel port for ECP or EPP instead of standard.

2. How about trying 5L drivers? (not sure if win95 has built in driver for 5L - that model was 600dpi too)

Please let us know if this solves or not.

I ended up re-installing the printer as a PCL printer without the status window option and it seems to be working o.k. There is obviously a communicating problem between the PC and printer - possibly the port itself.
