Comment: I have recently purchased a new computer with win98 and tried installing my HP5100c scanner, only to find the cd that came with it is not for win98.After downloading new drivers from HP,I can't get them to install on my comp.I get the error message" an error has occured which prevents restoring your files." I have tried reloading the drivers several times.I have tried several different downloaded drivers thinking an error may have occured...no luck.My comp is a Dell 450 w/128 ram,12gig h.d..Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Mike W

Reply: (edit)I have read several reports that Windows '98 loads twain drivers that aren't compatible with several scanners. You might try copying the older twain.dll driver over the newer one.

Reply: (edit)I have the CD that came with the HP 5100C, but it does not work with Win98. I called HP and they sent me one free of charge (I had to atleast pay the shipping of 1.78) Also, look for my other posts on this forum concerning a problem with the 5100C scanners that will render it useless. It will start to make a grinding noise. HP will not fix, repair, or replace them right now. They will only offer you the 5200C for $199 (discounted supposedley)

Reply: (edit)so this is the frustration bulletin board! so this is where i can write that I had the same problems (it doesn't matter where you live!) and these arrogant people from the HP helpdesk are a worthless bunch, so are the people where I bought my computer although they have a servicedesk, they redirect you to HP or Windows. Next time I buy my computer at the local supermarket, because maybe I get an even better service over there. i spend, no wasted 3 full weekends, on the problem! and just like everyone else i think i've been fooled...

Reply: (edit)I love my 5100c....or at least I used to! Now that I have Win 98 2nd Ed installed the scanner is little more than an expensive paper weight with a pretty green light on the front. I have downloaded the 98 drivers and software(17 meg+) from HP. It's worthless. It loads but, when I go to scan I get an error saying the parallel port is in us by something else or the scan proggy just freezes. There is nothing else hooked to the port only the scanner. Is there anyone in the world that got their 5100c to work with WIN 98? P.S. HP, YOU GUYS SUCK Ü

Reply: (edit)My HP 5100C scanner won't work on my new Dell with Win Me. I loaded the drivers for Me from HP and it still won't work. The scanning program freezes. I removed and reinstalled the software several times with no success. Is there anyone who has a 5100C working with Me? If so, tell me how to get mine to work. Thanks, Harold

Reply: (edit)i had my hp5100c scanner working fine under Windows98 on a pentium (133Mhz) motherboard. When i upgraded to a 450mhz with WindowsME the only way i got mine to work reliably was to set my parallel port to EPP1.9 , some bios options don't give you that choice though. its been fine for the last 4 months. another thing is if you have a printer concantentated from your scanner to remove it and see what happens
