I can't figure out how to change the Icon and the Text of the start menu using ResHack program. Can anyone give me the steps to do so? Or, if it's to long to post just point me to the right direction on some text on the subject. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

G'day User, assuming you are modifying COPIES of the files I mentioned back in post 92319 this should be easy.
In Reshack's left pain will be a list of resources, the one you want here is the String Table #37 [it might be different in win98 but near-by]. Click on the 1033 icon and in the right pain you should see heaps of text lines, the one you change is 578, "Start" to what you want [do not touch the number, only change the word]. There might be a limitation of how many chars for this so be forewarned.
Was that simple or what?
And now for User.exe [16x16], uh-oh!! ResHack won't open it, now you see why I recommended Exescope and why I got rid of Reshack [had to redownload it again just for you]
Anyway to change icons you had best get Mircoangelo as this will have a library editor to change the icon(s) more easily .exe's and .dll's etc...

Yep, that was hours ago [or was it days?]
All you do is just change the word from "Start" to whatever you want and save. If you get an error saying the file cannot be increased in size that is because there could be to many chars, I think 5 is the limit for the start button but I am not sure.
and reboot to Dos to copy back the modified COPY of Explorer.exe.
TIP: save all your modified files somewhere so you don't have to go thru it all again, not to mention backing up the originals, as if I had to mention it again.
And the icon editor is Microangelo, not as previously spelt.
Any probs or more tips you can @ me, I've modified many system and internet files with a RE program(s)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Already have Microangelo. If I run into problems I know who to go to, thanks!

Text changed! Damn I feel retarted because of how easy that was!
Now I'm having difficulty changing the Windows Icon next to the text on the start menu button to one of my own.
I've also seen people with the "Windows 98" the one written vertically when the start button is depressed and expanded replaced with different text and a image included. Is that also possibly done using a Resource Editor?

that should also be in Explorer.exe, all you do is export it [save it] as a bmp to the desktop and make whatever change in Paintbrush and then import it back.
Do not change the it's size or name or colour format
The icon must be 16x16x16 for the start button or 16x16x256 for win98, not sure about that.
You can @ me as I have more info and tips that I don't wish to explain here, too involved
