*.pdf files are viewed with Adobe Acrobat Reader, which you can download for free from www.adobe.com (It is often included in some software as well). As far as *.shs files, I don't know what program reads these files.

.shs files have been known to carry viruses. But they can also have information, pictures, graphs, etc...., they are created when you drag a picture out of MS Word '97. When you double click on it, it should either bring up Word or Paint. But only do this if the file is from a trusted source.

If you are sure a source of the shs files you are able to open them with cut and paste commands (if they are pictures) try to paste them into any MSWINDOWS graphic programme.Probably somebody has used the cut and paste method to copy them into e-mail message. If you are not sure the source of the files just delete them. They may contains the viruses pasted into e-mail with the same method.
p.s. Sorry fo my english if you find any language mistake i'm still learning

I have been "HIT" by one of these SHS files....how do I get rid of its effects...I have tried the registry, Replacing the *.INI files in The windows directory....It seems to have been embedded into the Kernel somehow...I have found a temporary fix for the problem, BUT I need to rid myself of this once and for all.

i found that you can view a SHS file's extension if you use another type of browser than Explorer... and therefore you can safely open it and see the code w/o it executing. for instance, someone had sent me a SHS file.. but after i saved it the extension disappeared. i searched for *.shs and it returned a single txt file. i used CuteFTP to browse the directory and could easily see the SHS extension. then from the ftp program i viewed the file with a text viewer i use for programming and it looked like vbscript, a subscript of visual basic that windows can run w/o compiling. a shs file could easily have control over any software on your computer.

A month later... you have probably solved your scanned photo dilemma, but I have an idea or 2 for you to test. Examine the options when you Right click on the photo. Recent versions of Word will have Copy, and Edit Picture commands (Document Object/Open will get you to the same place as Edit Picture if you have no Edit Picture command visible).
Using Edit Picture allowed me to manipulate a .bmp embedded into a Word document into a Jpeg. Here’s how: After selecting Edit Picture I chose Save As, saved it in HTML. Then opening it in my browser and right clicking allowed me a Save Picture As option which I used to create my Jpeg.
Right clicking and choosing Copy from the Word document, then Pasting into Paintshop, or any graphics program capable of creating Jpegs should be even easier. Just save in the desired format. I didn’t have a .shs to experiment with, but you are wise to change the format away from the .shs as this file type is often used maliciously which might make people hesitant to look at the photos if sent via E-mail.
