Subject: How to restore fat32 and all files?
|
Comment: I have 2 hdds. In the first 30gb disk was fat32 and in the second was fat32 (6gb) and fat16 (400mb). I had inserted msdos6.22 setup disk and booted from it. It showed that there is only one disk, the second fat16 partition. So i had typed "setup" then pressed on "format C drive for using msdos". But instead formating the 2nd partition of my 2nd disk it started to format my 1st disk. When it was on 10% completed I turned-off my PC. Then I had started it from WinME Startup floppy. I typed "c:" and got a message: "Invailid media format". All other drives were OK. I ran the Partition Manager program and it reported that there is two partitions on my 1st disk: 1st part.-2gb fat16 and the 2nd one - 28gb unused space. I changed my hard drives and instaled WinME on the working fat32 partition of my 6,4gb drive. I'd tried many different programs like Easy Recovery (Tiramisu) from On-track, Fast file recover and etc but I didn't recovered my lost files. Please, help me. I had very large mp3 collection, family documents, programs sources and other files.

Reply: (edit)dos 6.22 will not see a fat 32 partition so it went to the first one it recognised. go to bootdisk.com and download a win98 bootdisk and you will see all your partitions.

Reply: (edit)You should be able to recover your files with a good data recovery tool. Here's a free one: http://www.webattack.com/features/feature_driverescue.php?id=3736&r=h Be sure to restore the files to a different disk...NOT the same one you're restoring from.

Reply: (edit)Take all your Dos 6.22 stuff and carry it out to the trash or you might continue to run into problems like that. Win9X has Dos 7, use it!

Reply: (edit)Here's the thing though. You can't format a fat32 partition with dos 6.22. Somewhere along the way you had to repartition the 30 gig. Well anyway, as far as I know partitioning and formatting doesn't write anything to the data area of the drive. It just removes the partitioning info. So as long as you don't write to the 30 gig it should be possible to recover it. That doesn't mean it's going to be easy. Check out zippy's site recomendation.

Reply: (edit)Daveincaps, Dos 6.22 didn't format fat32. It formatted the hard disk. I think it used fdisk-like program to create a new fat16 partition. I'm now running Drive Rescue tool from zippy's site. It found 6 logical partitions - two of them is fat32 (with my recycle bin and program files folder) and other are fat12/16.
