Comment: I have accidently installed an unsupported audio driver. Now there is no sound at all. I like to erase this new driver and install my old sound driver. I have my old driver in a disk. I tried to install the old driver, but it won't work. How could I get my old driver back? Pls help me out.

Reply: (edit)To get rid of the unsupported sound driver that you installed, Right click on 'My Computer' and from the menu that appears, select properties. Then in the window that appears click on the device manager tab. You will now see a list of all the deviced that are installed in your computer. click on the plus sign beside 'Sound, video, and game controllers'. for every item that appears under 'Sound Video and game controllers' select it and click on remove. You will get a dialog box asking you if you are sure if you want to remove that device, just click ok. After you are done with that, reboot your computer. If your sound card is plug and play your computer will automatically detect the sound card and ask you for the disk with the driver. If your sound card isn't plug and play, go into the control panel and double click on 'Add new Hardware' Your computer will do a search on it's self (it will take between 3-10 minutes depending on the speed of your computer.) Then you will be prompted for the disk with the driver.

Reply: (edit)Hello- First off, it isnt as complicated as you think. First check and see if the driver you have is a .inf file or a .exe file. If it is an exe file, double click it, it will load a setup program and install the driver for you. If it is an inf file or a series of other stuff with no standout exe file, do the following. click start/settings/control panel. from the dialogue select system. from there go to the device manager tab. Find your sound card under the sound and video game settings tab. Double click it. Click the button that says to reinstall the driver. When the thing pops up select the radio button "install from a list or specific location". select to find it yourself, point it to your floppy drive, it selects it and tells you it is compatible and then just click go and it installs. Just a side note, this is from memory cause i am on XP (and surprising liking it, thanks bill for some stability after all these years of dual booting linux). Anyway, feel free to modify/trash what i have said if someone thinks i have done wrong. hth -Ryan

Reply: (edit)Thanks a million to Bill & Ryan. I got my sound back. I feel i got my life back. I removed all devices under sound, video and game controllers and then restart my computer. Upon restarting it said new hardware found, have disk? I put my cd and clicked yes. And it has been installed automatically from my cd. After installing wrong driver I was so anxious that I was only busy with my pc for last two days and couldn't do any other work. You guys are awesome. simply excellent. I appreciate your long writtings. I will remeber your help. Thanks once again.
