Set the attribute of the windows 3.1 to hidden, system, (ie. ATTRIB +s +h windows) then install win98. This will give you full installation, must do it to a separate directory (ie. win98). Once done, you can delete the win31. Make sure that you have enough space for both.

You can use the Full version you have IF THERE IS NOTHING ON YOUR DRIVE YOU WISH TO RETAIN. However if you have data on you drive you wish to keep, then NO the version you have will not work.

It is likely though that since you were using 3.1, there is nothing on that drive you will need or be able to use with Win 98. Any personal files you have would likely be small enough to fit on floppy disks.

IF you DO NOT wish to retain anything on the drive, you can use the version you have. I really don't think that the Upgrade version of 98 would work to upgrade from 3.1 anyway, but it may. Anyway, if the version you have now is on CD, you would need to get someone to make you a Win98 boot disk with CD-ROM support and boot to that floppy disk, format the drive and install your new version of 98. Again, this option is only if you DO NOT wish to retain any data from the drive.

Hope that helps.

jerry,

Here's a little trick that worked for me. Go to a computer that is already using Windows 98 and make a boot/system disk. Put the Windows 98 CD in the CD-ROM and copy the WIN98 directory to a folder on your current hard drive and call it WIN98 or something obvious like that. Once that's done, then reboot using that new boot disk. Delete the windows directory by using deltree.exe (which would be nice to have on the system disk...hint.hint). Once that's done, go to that WIN98 directory and type in "setup" and you're on your way! Couldn't hurt to run a defrag right away.

Pierre

You want a clean as install dude, Backup your essential data and start again.

If you do reinstall your OS, get a nice clean install going that has never had a game or app run on it. Keep your C: for only the OS i.e 600MB - 1GB and dont have any fancy windows crap i.e Channel bars, customised wall paper, animated this and that.
Move your My Documents to a different Drive as well as the Outlook express mail folder(which when you are installing outlook it will ask where to put this folder). Once you have done this do a defrag (Coz windows chucks its data all over da place)take a "Ghost (Symantec App)" of your c:. (You must have two drives/partitons).
Once this is done you can reload your OS in a maximum of 5 mins (mine 1min 30 sec). Next time you have a "Windows Moment" its no biggy. And your mail and documents will not be affected. (Copy your favourites folder too).
Once you have your base ghost, you can make up an "essential ghost" with a Virus Scanner, a firewall( I suggest BlackIce from "Network Ice" ) a web bot ( I suggest Web Ferret to search 10 search engines at a time) )If you wanna be an efficient dude install games on top of your "essentials ghost" and make a new ghost; game ghost.
You could also load on top of your "essentials ghost" an Apps ghost with MS Office etc apps ghost etc.

Once this is done you will have three clean lean and mean versions of your OS for the task at hand.

Please do this as fol.

1. Restart your system.
2. In your BIOS setting make the boot sequence CDROM,C,A.

3. Again It will restart.
4. When you boot from it format your C: drive.
