If you delete 98 you won't be able to 'return to it' unless you reinstall it.

Pop in the XP CD and boot from it - you'll be presented with various options - you can choose to format & remove the existing Windows 98 or else install XP while keeping 98. In that case, you would be able to select one or the other from a boot menu when the system starts

Like the man said you can do a dual boot.
I don't know if you took it that way or not.
XP uses the NTFS file system.
98 can not see it.
You can install XP and have 98 as a back up.
At some future time if you want to delete 98 all you have to do is convert your entire hard drive to NTFS and 98 is gone.
98 is great for old games and stuff
Do a dual install, you wont be disappointed.

Well, actually, you CAN install XP on a FAT drive, and since XP, on a NTFS drive, will see a FAT partition, the only problem would be if you are booted into '98, you would not be able to see the NTFS drive.

jboy, thats not correct. You CAN install Windows XP on top of Windows 98 and uninstall it if you need to as well. If you want to be able to uninstall xp you need to use FAT32 when installing it, if you don't want to be able to uninstall it (making the xp install permanent) use NTFS...but hey, if you are going to be doing that, might as well do a clean install.

I'm pretty sure that's not what I said

... poster claimed:

"how can i delete windows 98 and then install xp?"

If actually removed, it won't be coming back without effort

For a more thorough treatment of WinXP there is, after all, the XP forum - if I left out an option - sue me

you should not install a dual system ino one partition. If you have one drive you need to split it up into two partitions before the install and install XP on the second partition. If you have two drives, you can go ahead and install XP on the second drive.

http://tinyurl.com/b25tu>I did research because all responses seemed different.Everything jboy posted is correct. You can keep all your files by upgrading to Windows XP in Fat 32 format. If you are unhappy you can simply uninstall and go back to Windows 98 with no problems.

I little but more about your info about your hardware would help. XP will run on what CPU you have 700mhz but really you need 800mhz for it to run best. At least 128MB of ram is needed. But you should double that to 256MB, 512MB is better still. Also if you install Xp over 98 do the system test first and read the report. It will tell you what has to be uninstalled before you install Xp and reinstalled after you put Xp on. Also it will tell you what hardwear needs XP drivers. Which should be got first before you upgrade.

Note do not put in the Xp cd at boot up to upgrade. Put it in the drive white 98 is running. It will then give you the options to upgrade. During the upgrade you will be promted to keep 98 if you wish.It wont be dual booted but 98 will be backed up. But do the system test first. To remove Xp later you should find it in add remove progams.

The way jboy explained in his first post will cause you to loose 98.

hello everyone,

thank you all so very much for all the replies and suggestions and pls know that i really appreciate the help from you all.

yes, i did say that if i could uninstall 98 and then install xp instead and if i dont find it satisfactory that i would reinstall 98 again.

however, as i read on, there seem to be a dual back up which i have no idea of before, but i know now....

anyways, i shall try inserting the xp cd first and see what will happen eg. a report of it....

thank you all again :)
