Subject: How to install AsusCD-Rom in win 98OS: Microsoft windows 98CPU/Ram: 128Model/Manufacturer: Asus S520/A |
Comment: Dear all, May you help me please? My computer use windows 98.I have asus brand cd rom. But I lost the this to intall this CD. I search and download in the internet the software to intall it, its name is CDS520A.zip in Driverguide website. But I can not understand the instruction: Add this line in Autoexec.bat
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:ASUSCD01 /V ------------------ Add these lines in Config.sys DEVICE=C:\ASUS_CD\CDROM.SYS /D:ASUSCD01 LASTDRIVE=Z P.S.: if you run the .exe , you do not have to add the lines, just modify them. You can probably install the .sys file wherever you like as long as you modify the location in config.sys(eg: install the file to C:\windows\system and modify the line to read: DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CDROM.SYS /D:ASUSCD01) May you guide me the steps to install Asus CD-ROM S520/A. many many thanks in advance Ms.Linh

Reply: (edit)You shouldn't need drivers for Win98; assuming the drive is a standard IDE. What you've downloaded is (apparently) for DOS/Windows 3.1.

Reply: (edit)Unless you plan on running the CDROM in pure or raw DOS, you don't need any entries and/or drivers loaded in your config.sys and autoexec.bat. Windows provides its own drivers for CDROMs. If you have a need for dos CDROM support you could load the CDROM drivers which come with the O/S; in c:\config.sys add; DEVICE=c:\windows\command\oakcdrom.SYS /D:IDE-CD in c:\autoexec.bat add; LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:IDE-CD /M:10 It's a good day when you learn something

Reply: (edit)Are you saying that you already have Windows 98 installed on your computer, but you are no longer able to access the (ASUS) CD drive from Windows? If that's the case (as mentioned) it's not a matter of having the DOS driver installed - which is what CDS520A.zip contains - Windows uses its own drivers. Your CD drive may have a mechanical issue, or for some reason Windows just isn't "seeing" it We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

Reply: (edit)If you're replacing an older cdrom with the Asus, just make sure it's connected and jumpered the same as the old one. If it previously didn't have a cdrom you may also need to check in cmos/bios setup to make sure the IDE controller it's connected to is enabled. It's also possible the bios is seeing the cdrom but windows isn't. You can go to CONTROL PANEL--SYSTEM--PERFORMANCE and see if it's running in msdos compatibility mode. Post back which is the case with your system.

Reply: (edit)Also, if all connections and settings (Master/Slave/Cable-Select) seem OK, try installing through Start->Control Panel->Add New Hardware. Allow Win98 to first try to find the new drive. If it still doesn't see it, try to manually install the drive. If it THEN doesn't see it, then I would suspect a faulty drive...
