I'm trying to install a second HardDrive on a PC. I got it to detected but it did not assigned a drive letter to it. I'm assuming I have to format it but how can I do that without a drive letter for it. Please help!!

So you went in the the BIOS and autodetected the second hard drive but it didn't assign a letter to it .I'm not sure why it isn't because it has to .Is it on the same ide cable as the C:/ drive or is it on the cable with the CDROM drive or is it on its own cable .Make sure you have the new drive set to slave on either ide cable or at least makes sure it has the oppposite setting as the other drive on the cable .
if you need help icq 14530104

How do you know if the PC detedted the HD if it didn't assign a drive letter? From the BIOS setup you must enable 2nd HD(usually by AUTODETECT), then FDISK. You should see option 5, Select the 2nd HD, fdisk it then format. That's it, you must see a drive letter. I assumed that you have Windows. Good luck

Your old drive is the Master, so use the jumpers on the new drive to make it Slave. Don't forget to read the instructions that came with the new drive. There's a lot to do when installing a second drive and we don't know what you did so far. Good luck

You will need to use FDisk or a program such as EZDrive to partition, format, and assign a letter to the drive.

When you add a second HD and have bios recognize it, you are only half way there. When you look in your windows explorer, it will not show the drive that is not formatted. You will see it if you go to the explorer then up to my computer. From there, choose the second HD then choose format from the pull down in the file menu for the second drive. This should take care of your problem. You also can format the second drive the DOS way by booting up your computer and hitting the f8 key (just as it says starting win95)and going to the c prompt in dos. From there, you would do the following: from the c: prompt, type format D: this will format the "d" drive if this is your second HD.

Oneway to do it is this: Make bootdisk where you have not only the boot files but the fdisk. Then change your new drive to be a primary master. After that boot your computer with your bootdisk and run fdisk. Now you can partition your new HD and format it. After that your computer will assing letter(s) for that HD and you can use it normally... Anyway, maybe this is not the fastest way :)

When I am about to connect the 2nd hard drive into my computer. I turn on my computer, nothing shows up on the screen.
It's just blank. Then I try turn off the computer power, but the switch doesn't work.
Then disconnect second hard drive, and it went back to normal. What is the problem.
