When something goes wrong when switching to or during standby mode, Windows asks if you want to disable the standby mode so the problem doesn't happen again.
It happened to me the other day, and I accidentally clicked yes.
I looked at all of the settings, including the BIOS settings, I looked at Windows help, and I googled, but I can't find out how to enable Standby mode again.
How the heck can I get standby mode back after accidentally disabling it? Thanks,
-Trent

That was the first place I tried. Nothing. It doesn't even list standby as a power option on the shut down menu.
I made a little mistake - this problem is on my Compaq Presario with Windows 2000, although I am also having a standby problem on my Acer Extensa 501DX with Win98SE:
Because of the "I wonder if this really works like it says it does" attitude that I have, I went into the Acer Notebook Manager and disabled the "Standby when LCD is closed" option, to find out that it did really work.
I enabled it again, but now it still won't standby when I close the LCD. It will standby when you choose it in the Shut Down dialog box or when a timer is set for it to standby.
Can anybody help me get standby back when I close the LCD, as well? Thanks,
-Trent

Thanks for the link, jam, but it didn't help either computer. The Compaq doesn't show "Advanced Power Management Support" in System Devices, and it didn't detect it when I ran the Add New Hardware Wizard. I uninstalled it on the Extensa, and Windows sucessfully reinstalled it after a restart, but it still doesn't go into Standby when the LCD is closed.

No good. I assume it's just for the Compaq, since the Extensa does have Standby in the shut down menu.
As for the Compaq, Windows 2000 doesn't even have a VPOWERD directory in the VXD directory. That article applies to Windows 98/ME, though.

Okay, I fixed the problem with the laptop not going into standby when the LCD is closed - is was the EtherJet PC card. I took it out, and now it goes into standby when it's closed.
So that just leaves the Compaq Presario with Windows 2000, which doesn't have a standby option at all since I accidentally pressed "Yes" to disabling standby.
