Comment: I need to format my drive C: so i can install windows 98se on it. (I have win 98 and it won't let me install over it). So i need to format it. Can i do that from DOS? I'm using the Safemode Command prompt at the moment. I need to install 98SE because the new processor i have bought (2.4ghz)is too fast for it, so i need to upgrade to 98SE. Thanks ALEXb

Reply: (edit)You want to use a Windows 98 boot disk to start up the computer. The Windows 98 boot disk will have drivers for CD-ROM drives, start up the computer with the Windows 98 boot disk in the floppy disk drive and the Windows 98 CD in the CD-ROM drive. Choose 'Start computer with CD-ROM support' when the menu appears. When you get to the Command prompt 'A:\>' Type in D: or what ever drive letter assigned to the CD-ROM drive and press enter. at the D:\ prompt type in 'cd win98' (no quotes) and press enter. type in 'format C:' (no quotes) and press enter. Press y to confirm that you want format the drive when asked.

Reply: (edit)Alex, is the error message something like "Windows setup has determined that you already have an operating system installed on this computer"? The "workaround" for this is to rename win.com to something like win.old, then reboot using a Win98 bootdisk. At the A:\> prompt type: E:\Win98\setup (ENTER) This assumes that the Windows CD is in the E: drive. (A typical Win98 bootdisk creates a RAMDrive as D:, causing your CD drive to be bumped up one drive letter assignment.) HTH Post back with results. Dave
