Hello everyone, i had this on-going kernal32.dll problem with Win98 SE, and it took me bloody ages to fix the problem. But since i found out how to do it, i'll share the methods i used to fix the problem (without the common answer to RE-INSTALL windows) Do the following steps (you might want to print this out coz its not exactly small a post)

Step 1. Delete all your temperary Internet Files, and Cookies. Reboot and boot into command prompt (by pressing "F8") on startup, located in the c:\windows directory your win386.swp Swap file, rename/or move it to another directory (not c:). If you rename it change it from "win386.swp" to "win386.old" and restart again. Let windows during the next boot up re-create your swap file.

Step 2. Most people know when the kernal32.dll error will occur as in, when window starts, or is about to be shut down, or when you close a folder or internet explorer, etc etc.. So find out what triggers the problem off.

STEP 3. When starting windows press "F8" and load into "Safe mode" do what you normally do to trigger the Kernal32.dll error off.
-If the error occurs in safe mode, this isnt good news people, generally means its a corrupt windows problem, or faulty hardware e.g. RAM.
-If the error does not occur then its all good news!!!

Step 4. If the error doesn’t occur, generally it means its a faulty driver or application, try reinstalling the following things
-Graphics Driver
-I Explorer (by going to add remove programs) clicking remove (this doesn’t remove it, it opens an uninstall wizard which gives you options, and Reinstall I explorer. Restart.

Step 5. when in windows click “start” then “run” and type “msconfig” Under the section “Startup” you will see all the programs that run when your computer starts up, go through each one of them by un ticking them all and restarting, and one by one ticking them and restarting and checking to see what normally triggers the error, triggers it. If you go through them one at a time, and test it, eventually you will be able to tell what program triggers it off and when this happens RE: INSTALL THAT FRICKING PROGRAM and if the error occurs when you have it GET RID OF IT.

Step 6. If none of these steps solved your problem you can use a very scary program that cleans your registry (cleans out old registries) like Reg Cleaner..

Step 7. If none of these Steps worked then I suggest you pick your computer up, go to the highest building in your local area (don’t travel too far) and through your computer off the top story, then go down to the street below and set it alight, and dance around it drinking cheap wine. ( because this might make you feel better about having to reinstall windows)

Thought of 2 other ways of fixing the problem, reinstall your motherboards chipset drivers or updating them (or any other hardware drivers).

The kernal32.dll problem is a problem with a kernal driver. You can see what your kernal drivers are by doing start/run/drwatson and clicking the icon which appears in the systray and then clicking the kernal drivers tab. However, the problem is most likely a driver which failed to load so it wouldn't appear here if it didn't load.
Boot with F8, choose boot logging, then reboot. A look at the file c:/bootlog.txt should indicate which driver failed to load. Then locate the file with find files to see which program owns that file and needs reinstalling. If it belongs to a device, it may be a little trickier to discover the source.

Kernel32 errors can be caused by many things. Among them are corrupt or outdated Display Drivers; conflicting programs running in the background; badly fragmented hard drives/logical disk problems and versions of Windows which require updating. To understand and troubleshoot these possibilities I would suggest to read the following articles:

Hope this helps.

Right On.
There is NO "kernel32" problem AND there is no ONE fix for it.
This DLL is part of almost everything that goes on in a PC and when an "invalid" fault occurs (as opposed to the normal faults that go on all the time as part of the architecture) the error can be caused by a multitude of things.
