Could someone tell me how to extract a file from .cab files? I know the .cab file to use, but I don't know how to extract a certain file (vmouse.vxd) from it. Thanks for any help!

One way is to download Winzip 8.0 from www.winzip.com it opens CAB files in the same way as ZIP files. Highlight file to extract to selected directory. There are other ways but I find this way easy! Works direct from Windows Explorer as well!

In the unlikely event of not being able to resolve this with Micks solution, e-mail me and I'll tell you how to get it out from DOS.

Or, if you are on Windows 98...simply goto Start/Run/type in "sfc" minus the " " and click OK, that'll take you to the System File Checker. Put the dot in Extract one file from installation disk, then put the name of the file you want to extract in the long white box and click the START button right below it. That will take you to a page that wants to know where the cab files are. If the cabs are on the computer, they are likely in C:\windows\options\cabs and if you only have the CD, then it's in D:\Win98 or whatever your CD rom drive letter is. the next box wants to know where you want to extract the file to, like C:\windows\system
Hope this helps

Well, I already have a zip utility installed called quarterdeck and it don't open cab files, so I tried Ken's suggestion and it worked great. It was very quick and easy. Thanks so much for all the help. I'm about to test it and see if my problem is solved. Thanks again. Vicky.

Hope you are now fixed Vicky.
System File Checker is great if you know what you are looking for and which CAB file it is in! I did not know which version of Windows 9x Vicky has so went for a more general fix. But the important thing here is that Vicky gets her file one way or the other!

Well, after putting the file in place and booting into dos-mode, it still is giving me windows protection error - you must restart your computer. I think maybe I can fix it by removing the vmouse.vxd from the system.ini file. I'm going to try it anyways. Thank you all so much for the help on this. Vicky.
