I am looking for a way to enable restrictions on the control panel and the date and time settings and such. This is for a gaming computer for the kids in my family and they are always playing around with the clock settings (usually to try and get to stay on longer!) and I can't get them to stop. I searched on Google and on the old posts here and can't find anything that works. I tried the NoControlPanel value and changed it from 0 to 1 and nothing. I know this can be done in Win 9X but I can't find a way that works. I have TweakUI but am not seeing an option to hide/disable the Control panel.
I am not going to tell you how to be a parent but if that were me I would simply pull the plug on the computer until my children obeyed the rules. Placing roadblocks isn't the answer.
Thanks. I am still having trouble making it work. I added the NoControlPanel DWORD with a value of 1 to every Policies Key I found with the registry search and it's still not working. Could this be a problem with Windows 98 First Edition that is causing this?
No, it is not a problem with just first edition Win98. The entry itself may not work or you may not be doing it right - install poledit and let poledit do it right, that's why they wrote it believe it or not.
Install your Windows 98 CD and navigate to: TOOLS\RESKIT\NETADMIN\POLEDIT folder. Read poledit.txt to learn that you can install poledit via Add/Remove Programs and in your case you would want to use grouppol.inf to do the installation with since you are trying to head up your "group" of kids.
You can't tell if the ability to hide the Control Panel is inherent in Win98 because it is feature of TweakUI and it may be instead written into TweakUI's files and thus the regsitry entries alluded to won't work until TweakUI is installed to read those entries and then act on them.
THAT is a known method of operation of TweakUI and that is exactly how it brings it's features to play. Poledit may be acting in a similar manner to TweakUI and thus it's own set of registry entries may be the ones touted instead. And then it all makes sense why those registry entries aren't working don't it?
