Can someone PLEASE give me step by step instructions on how to set up a dual boot system? I have an old 486, freshly formatted that I'd like to do this too but everywhere I look it's all about how to just install win 95 over 3.11 What i'd like to do is have a boot menu that allows to choose 3.11 or win 95 at startup. This pc is being used for troubleshooting purposes only so i just need to get the systems on there - not too worried about space. There is a 400 meg hard drive that I can partition as necessary. I would really appreciate some help. Thanks.
The easiest way to have both Win9x and Windows 3.x is to install DOS and Win3.x, then install Windows 9x to a differnet directorty than Win3.x. When the PC boots up with win9x, A menu can be accessed (by pressing F8, or getting TweakUI from the powertoys set, and turning on the menu), then select previous operating system, and presto, you'll be in good 'ol dos, and typing win should invoke win3.x. Another option is to buy System Commander Deluxe (www.systemcommander.com), or Partition Magic 4.0(www.powerquest.com), which both ahve bot managers. It will take a little longer to learn how to effictively learn how to use these (at least System Commander), but I think it is the bast solution.

Load Windows 3.1X first then install Windows 95 from excuting setup.exe on the windows 95 CD-ROM to another directory other that windows. Install windows 95 in a driectory like WIN95. Then if that does not find the 2 versions of windows and automatically set up the dual boot startup then open MSDOS.SYS in a text editior. Notepad is what I usually use and change the BootMulti=0 to BootMulti=1.
Good Luck !!!!

I use System Commander - it works great. Only one difficulty: W95 overwrites SC, but the manual walks you through the re-install. As in the other replies above, you need to install W95 in a separate dir. 95 resists this, and it took me several tries to install,

I used Partition Magic to create a separate partition for DOS/WIN 3.1 and WIN95. I believe this method works best since there is no possibility for interaction between the two systems. Create a third partition for your data files and you will be able to access them with either system. Best of all if WIN95 crashes (and it will....it's just a matter of time) you won't loose all your data files. Partition Magic is very easy to use (it must be...because I did it). Be sure you have a WIN95 boot disk before you start. The PM manual comes with very good step by step instructions and their tech support line is great.
