I have been getting the gray and white box that says that "Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close". It gives me a choice of whether I want to "Send Error Report" or "Don't Send". When I choose to send the report, the only recommendation is that there is a newer version of IE available which is IE 6 SP1. I am using IE 5.5 SP2 and I don't want to upgrade because of the problems IE 6 has been having. I did download the patch that is suppose to be a cumulative patch for all versions of Internet Explorer.
Please give me a step by step instruction on how to disable the IE Error Reporting Box. I do know that I have to edit the Registry but I need a "line by line" description on what to do once I get into the Registry to change it.
Thanks,

It is in the Microsoft Knowledge base article below.

Yes, I have looked at it many times. Is this what I put in the Registry -
"IE WatsonEnabled = (DWORD) 0"
without the quotes? Do I actually type in the word ...
(DWORD) ?
This is all so new to me.
Can I reinstall IE 5.0 that came on my Windows 98SE CD without reinstalling Windows?
Thanks,

Click on Start, Run, type in Regedit click on OK.
Go all the way down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main, then click on Edit in the menubar, select New from there click on DWORD Value.
Now type in: IEWatsonEnabled and hit the [Enter]key. The default value is 0.
When you reboot the new setting becomes active.Disclaimer: Modifying the registry can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. One cannot guarantee that problems resulting from modifications to the registry can be solved. Use the information provided at your own risk.

Run Regedit
Browse to the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MainSelect the word MAIN
In the right window, right mouse, new, DWORD Value
You will get a field called NewValue#1 created AND hightlighted.
Type over it with the characters
IEWatsonEnabled
Then Enter
(By default, it's value is zero.)
Exit Regedit

Yes on the IE5 install
dword is the just type of registry field you are creating. When you created the registry field IE WatsonEnabled you had the option of designating it as a string value, binary value, or dword value. You should have selected dword value, then typed IE WatsonEnabled and pressed enter. Then you right click on the new field name you see there called IE WatsonEnabled, and select modify, then enter a 0 under the words value data. Press enter, close regedit and you are set.

Dakota-I went to RR Broadband and unbekown to me IE6 SP1 was installed on the CD they gave me. That was the best thing that could have happened to me. I could get rid of the IE Repair Tool with IE6. It has been a smooth ride. Just be sure and get the whole deal including SP1.

Thank you all for your quick replies.
This problem has just started within the past 30 days. I have been using IE 5.5 SP2 for about 2 months. I do not know why this IE Error has started to show up. It doesn't even do it everyday - just everyday 2 to 3 days. Very annoying though. Is this a bug that is in IE 5.5 SP2 and not in IE 5.01 SP2?
Can I reinstall IE 5.01 SP2 from the Internet? Will it install over IE 5.5 SP2?
Thanks,

Don't downgrade!!!
Once you get rid of the error reporting, IE will start to fail and give you an error message (this is available via the reporting screen, but a bit hard to find).
Once IE fails, note the message and post it back here.
In the interim, download and run Spybot and HiJackthis.
Both of these check for Spyware, which could be the cause of your failures.http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php#det
With each, use the update facillity to check for changes, before doing the scans.
