Subject: How to connect ethernet?
Comment:

I have two computers with windows 98. Each one has a Realtek RTL 8029 Ethernet card in working order. The two ethernet cards are attached to a hub which is also attached to Roadrunner cable internet. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to network my two computers together? I want to share files and a printer.

I'm not completely sure, but the only way I have ever seen that done is with a third computer acting as a router. I'm not saying this is the only way. just the only way I've seen it done. I think he set the router IP to the designated one, and then each of the branching computers to 10.0.0.x .
If you find out another way, let me know.
Andrew

see they already are networked together ,well the hardware is there ,you just have to set up the software.you will have to install ,file and printer sharing for microsoft networks and client for microsoft networks ,then click on the folders or drives you want to share and and share them then put in good long unusual passwords ,the reason is that shared drives are visible from the internet .and you may get hacked
this may work ,my only other idea is to use VPN ,virtual private networking if i figure that out i will repost .if you not sure email me and i will explain further

Paul,

The easiest way to accomplish this is to install a second NIC in one of your computers. Asign a LAN IP address to that NIC (192.168.0.x) and give it a subnet of 255.255.255.0. Next, configure your IP settings on the second computer to 192.168.0.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Unplug your cable modem from the hub and plug it into your original card in your PC that has two cards in it. What you are doing here is binding your new card to an IP address that is known only on your LAN and binding your internet IP address to your original card. Now, you will have one PC that connects to the internet and your LAN and the other PC connects only to your LAN. Now if you have Win98 SE, you can enable internet conection sharing on the PC with two NICs and allow the second PC (192.168.0.2) to connect through your internet connected PC to the internet. Also, enable file and printer sharing on both computers, and give them the same workgroup name. This should work.

Ed,
I have my Win 98 network setup with IP addresses and Internet sharing but the machine with the two NICs will not connect to the modem connection when Internet sharing is enabled; therefore my peer cannot connect. What am I missing?
