how can i connect my pc to my friend's pc using a modem and phone line? both we have win98 OS. thank you.

Hyperterminal. One computer is set up to answer the phone by opening one of the connections say mci mail and click cancel instead of dial, then type ata. Now the modem will answer the next call. At the same time your friend will type atdtxxxxxxx (your phone no in place of the x's)

The previous reply will not do the trick (ATA sends out the anser tone, but doesn't pick up the phoneline for you). The easiest way is: Let your friend start Hypermterminal with a connection direct to com1 or com2 (depends on what port the modem is). If he types in AT and gets an OK message then he should type in ATS0=1 . The modem will then answer the next call. To switch auto answer off again he types in ATS0=0 . Now you can start Hyperterminal too and let it dial your friends phonenumber. Your modem should connect to the one of your friend. In the menu of Hyperterminal you can now send and receive files with the Zmodem protocol. Good luck
