Hi all. I was able to use the Resource Hacker utility to change the icon and text on the Start button, but I would like also to change the Start button's font size. By default, the icon that windows displays is 16x16, and this depends on the font size configured for the start button. Does Anyone know in what file is the font specified? Similarly, I would like to modify the text on the Systray clock. In which file do the clock parameters reside? I tried to use TClock (and TClock2) to change the start button icon and font. The problem is that when TClock is running, my ThinkPad's battery monitor (on taskbar) disapears. So I'd like to find a way to change the resource files (using ResHacker or similar). I'd massively appreciate any ideas. Thanks! Dave.

Here (of course)

Thanks jboy. I already tried the tools on that website. However, the icons these tools display in the start button are 16 px height maximum. The thing is that my icons on the taskbar are large size. I was able to use a Resource hacker to change the default icon in user.exe. However, the icon displayed is only 16x16 because of the font used for the start button. I suppose it's possible to change the font in a resource file. I searched for days and couldn't find any solution! Anyone knows where these settings can be found?
Dave.

G'day Maitai, in all the years I've used Resource Editors I've never seen one yet that can change the font of a string, a dialog box font yes, but not the string resource. But that don't mean it can't be done. Nor have I ever actually seen the Start Button/Taskbar resource which I believe is part of the form that makes Explorer's look, such as in a Visual basic Explorer style form and might not be changable.
Of course changing the text and image of the Start Button and menuitems, dialogs etc is easy with these editors but they do have their limitations unfortunately. Perhaps a Disassembler or something along those lines might bring some joy on your intrepid quest to change the Start Menu font.
As for changing the size if the icon I doubt that could be done but still it may be possable. Sometimes you cannot expand the size of a system file even by a few bytes.
You could try the Programming Forum as someone there might know.

Sure - as I read it there, you can alter the text by hacking Explorer.exe, but I guess the font itself is not so readily altered.
I prefer to dispense with the font and just have a graphic (this also shrinks the button, leaving more room on the taskbar)
Tclock, Hook99 are some free ones - Panekiller is quite nice (albeit commercial) and you can use animation (ANI files)
Here's one that looks interesting: Start Toys
