Maximum Memory (RAM =Random Access Memory) your computer can handle is determined by:
1. Your chipset and motherboard combination.
This is one of several reasons to post the make and model of PC if manufactured by brand name companies or the make and model of the Motherboard in case of Custom built PCs.

Your Motherboard can handle only certain types of RAM to a certain Maximum amount in MB or GB.

2.The Operating System maximum is the top amount of memory that your operating system can handle.

OS maximums for popular versions of Microsoft Windows.

*Windows 95: 2GB
*Windows 98: 4GB
*Windows 98SE: 4GB
*Windows ME: 4GB

Windows NT: 4GB
Windows 2000 Professional: 4GB
Windows 2000 Advanced Server: 4GB or 8GB with PAE enabled
Windows 2000 Datacenter Server: 4GB or 64GB with PAE enabled
Windows XP Home: 4GB
Windows XP Professional: 4GB

* PCs with more than 512MB RAM running those OSes, under certain conditions can cause:
Out of Memory Errors" or "freezeup
or
BSODs

they only went to 233mhz and rarely there ARE 266mhz. and the rarest of all there WAS a 300mhz. but no 366mhz.

a 366mhz may go up to like 384mb or 256mb. I know my 233mhz only goes to 256mb and my 400mhz goes to 384mb max. and my 500mhz will go to 1gb max. I wouldnt go higher than like 128mb. If you wanna deck it out, then yes, so to 256mb. I have 256mb RAM and a 40gb HD on my 400mhz.

For Compaq Presario 4000 series, model 4090 US the RAM information are as shown:

1. The Motherboard has 3 Memory Sockets
2. The type of RAM that can be used are:
PC100 SDRAM DIMMs • CL=2 • Non-parity •
Or
PC133 SDRAM DIMMs • CL=2 • Non-parity •
3. Maximum RAM: 768 MB

You can install different amounts of RAM per slot like 128MB and 256 MB mixed, if you like.
If you mix PC 100 with PC 133 you will get only PC100 speed!

Other specs of CompaqPresario 4090 are as follows:

Bus Architecture: PCI/AGP
Hard Drive Bus: Ultra ATA-66
Native OS: Windows ME
CPU Type: 900MHz AMD Duron

If your PC is Compaq Deskpro with 166MHz Intel Pentium w/MMX , its RAM specs are entirely different. You should be very careful in buying the RAM.

Standard Memory: 16 or 32 MB (removable)
Maximum Memory: 384 MB
Memory Expansion: 3 sockets
Memory Comments: These SDRAM Modules can be either -10 (100Mhz/66Mhz) or -12 (83Mhz) but MUST have a EPROM on board.

You probably shouldn't add more than the current 64 Meg of RAM. Read this post, including the links, as you will see that your system probably won't cache more than 64 Meg of RAM, and therefore you will likely sustain a noticable performance hit.

Good luck.

Yeah, the only chipset that Intel manufactured for the P-I line that could cache more than 64 meg was the 430HX. You may want to more precisely check the specs of your machine before buying more RAM.
