I have a NEC 9736, P-1 233 MHz, 96 MB RAM, 4.3 Hd. OS is W98SE. I bought a Visioneer 6100 USB scanner and installed software and hardware as directed. When I attempt to scan, the software says it cannot communicate with the scanner. It is supposed to start and copy by pushing the button on it also, but nothing happens. The scanner light is lit indicating power it getting to it alright. I remember the old NEC Ready Forum tech saying something about having to enable USB in BIOS. Can anyone give me step by step instructions for enabling the USB ports in BIOS? I have no experience in BIOS. I don't have access to any other USB devices to test the USB ports indepently.

Howdy, Mad Mike. Well since there are many makers of BIOS/CMOS programs they differ. When you first start the computer it will say something like press F1 or DEL to enter setup. If you do this it will take you inside the BIOS/CMOS and you can make changes. I suggest if you are not comfortable with this you should visit NEC's web site or call there tech support for further assitance.
Laters,
Kevin The Tech Dude.

I have a NEC ready 9890, on it I use F2 to enter setup the rt arrow to sel Advance, down arrow to select usb, hit enter & choose enable . Save & exit
