I downloaded a sound converter program that has associated all sorts of file types with it. For instance: the program is called "2pat", and now my .zip files, instead of showing as a winzip icon are showing as a "2pat" icon. So when I click on a .zip file my comp automatically tries to open it with 2pat.exe! How can I change these file-types to be associated with the proper programs again. I run windows 98 SE

1) Hold down the shift key and right click on the file that you want to change the association if.
2) Then choose "Open with...".
3) Select the desired program from the list.
4) Check the box "Always use this program to open this file"

info on how to change file associations to none or choose the one you want from the drop down list, this write-up is for none, but you can substitute none for any other available file type.
if you accidentally associate a particular file
extension with the wrong application, don't try to fix
it from within Windows Explorer's File types dialog
box--there's no way to remove a single
extension from a registered file type without deleting
the entire entry and starting over. Instead,
you can click on the Start button, launch the Run
dialog box then type winfile and press
[Enter]. Once File Manager opens, pull down the File
menu and select the Associate
Command. When the Associate dialog box appears,
type the extension that you want to get rid
of in the Files with Extension text box. When you do,
you'll see the errant file association
appear in the Associate With text box. To remove the
file association, scroll to the top of the list
of file types, select (None), and then click OK.

Jay's suggestion is very good for changing to another file type but in order to invoke the "Open with",you must first select the file by left clicking on it once to highlight it and then hold down the shift key and right click on it.
www's way is good to disassociate a file type.
