Can you tell us why you want to do this. Normally there is no reason to change com ports. I have found that modems sometimes will not work if not assigned to port 1-4.

It's the way my computer is set up. When I have to format drive C, my modem installs on Com Port 1 and it only works on Com Port 5?????????????????????

Usually an on-board com port is set to com1. A PnP modem will create a virtual com port--that is, one that doesn't exist in hardware. It won't show up in 'ports' in device manager.

When you go to 'modems' in control panel after properly installing the drivers, what com port is assigned to the modem?

Some modem software will set up a dos port at com1, 2, 3 or 4 but still keep the virutal port for windows. Is that what you're thinking of? If not, how do you know it needs com5?

If I try to load the drivers from the disk it only offers me Com Port 1 and it will conflict with something or it just doesn't work or the drivers on the disk are no good and I can't find good drivers for the modem. The device manager say's it's a (U.S. Robotics 56K FAX INT) Manufactured by 3Com, the disk has a (Dell P/N 0278D) and a (3Com P/N 1.031.0087-00) and the board has a (DP/N 046XVP)

No Dan Penny came with the modem, I got the computer second hand. Everything works but I would like to gut the computer and just load windows and my modem. Kinda like restoring an old car, for optimal performance, and a clean machine.

Pull the modem out and look for a model number on the back. Post back that number.

Try here:

USR 0727

When it connects to driverguide it'll ask for a user name and password. You can use drivers and all. That is the ones they assign to everyone but they're in the process of changing that. You can sign up yourself as it's free.

Go to add/remove programs in control panel and remove any old modem stuff if it's listed there.

Unzip the file you downloaded and copy the extracted files to a floppy disk. Then click on the modem in device manager and choose to update the drivers. When it asks where to search, browse to the location of the drivers on the floppy disk.
