I have returned to you great people for help again. Thanks in advance to all of you who read my question, and to those who help me.... THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I have reinstalled win95, and I am trying to get on the internet and I cant install my ISP software because it says i need to run in at least 256 colors to run the program. When I try to change the display, it only gives me the 16 color option. I am assuming this is because I havent installed any drivers for the video card. Problem? I dont have a clue as to what driver to install for the card!! ick...how do I tell, I have opened the back of the computer and am not even really sure where the video card is located to see a name on it. I see the modem, sound card etc but have no idea where the video card is, that is the only thing I havent ever had to replace on my pc lol...help me please???? Thanks again so much guys!!!

Mom

Right click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, click properties, click the "Device Manager" tab, click the "+" sign in front of "Display Adapters", click what shows up there to hilite it. This should be the name of the video card/chipset your computer is now using. Post back with what you find there & someone will try to help you.

Check the back of your computer to see where you connect your monitor. That connection is the video card in your PC. Open up your computer and have a look to see waht kind of card you have. Then download the appropriate drivers.

Ok...I have traced the wire from the monitor into the back of the computer...it goes to a flat grey cable that goes to the mother board...nowhere close to where the plug connects to the mother board does it say a name..there is a large black square in the middle that says SiS.....I did the steps suggested by tufenuf as well...it tells me super vga...but this is the generic driver i installed from the win95 disk trying to get more then 16 colors...all it did was give me the option of monochrome and 16 colors....any other suggestions you guys??? Thanks~!

didn't you get motherboard setup disk when you bought the computer? It depends on your motherboard as well?

Go back into the Device Manager/Display Adapter and hilite the "super vga" entry, click the "Remove" button, restart your computer and hopefully Windows will reinstall the correct driver during the startup process.

no..unfortunatly I didnt get a disk for my motherboard or anything else on this computer. I bought it from a friend who needed the cash. I removed the super vga and restarted my system, it installed a standard vga when it came back up. Now i have 16 colors or monochrome. ....

I had a problem a bit like this, and it turned out to be faulty Video RAM.
Try replacing to VRAM and see what happens...
Look @ your card's manual to find out how to do this - don't ask me 'cause I think my faulty VRAM was caused by me switching it into another card ;)
**if it's anything like it was with me, the VRAM will be -very- tight fitting, and if you get it out one end first, all the little contacts bend and you have to bend them back, meaning it's more likely to get all staticy**
With me, my 2mb card reported having 4mb, and I couldn't go above 16 colors.
I just took out the faulty chip and everything worked fine, but I never replaced it, so now I only have 1mb VRAM :(

Oh well...

Does it let you resize from, say, 600x800 to 1024x768?

It sounds like your graphic card is integrated right to the motherboard. I had a similar problem, found cost for a $25 for a basic video card to be more reasonable then the frustration of spending more hours on it. By adding the new display adapter, an actual card (as opposed to integrated) PnP will pick it up and it comes with the drivers. Of course you can spend more, lot's more and get special features, but if you only want basically what it came with, I can't imagine spending more than $20-$30.

download Sandra Sisoft or dr. Hardware to see what video chipset you have.
Once you know this look up the manufacturer and the part# on google.com or something and the find the drivers. Once the drivers are downloaded further instructions should be in a readme file during the install!
