If you are going to format your hard drive first of all back up anything you might want. Go to Start>settings>control panel> then to add/remove programs. choose the tab that says create startup disk. Make the disk. This will have the files on it that you will need to format your hard drive. You will also need the Win95 installation cd-rom. The startup disk will have a Win95 version of DOS on it. After you have made the startup disk, backed up any files that you want and have a Win cd-rom then reboot in MS-DOS mode. It would also be a good idea to make backups of all of your device drivers because windows does not have them on the cd. You can get a list of the drivers installed on your system and the .inf files in control panel under system. They will probably take a couple of floppies. Anyway after you have everything backed up restart in DOS and at the dos C:\> prompt type FORMAT C:\ /U /S The /U is to do an unconditional format and the /S will transfer the system. If your windows system boots and works ok you may be better off to get a windows clean up utility for around $25 (US) and it will remove files that serve no purpose. This may prevent a big headache especially if you only have the upgrade version of the cd or no cd at all.

When you run into a problem reformatting a hard drive using drivespace on it the best thing to do is run fdisk and delete the partition. Another alternative and what i use whenever I format a hard drive is to run WDclear or another pseudo low level initialization program. You can download these from any hard drive manufacturer. These programs write 0 or 1 to every sector.

I found you on Jeeves, and would appreciate
any information you can give. I need to know where I can go to back up the drivers before I format the hard drive. The problem with the drive now is, It will not come up with the Web Browser on ICQ so I can receive the URL messages, and the click on the speakers used to be a single click, now it has a triple click on it. what gives? thanks, marvin at wb0ero@iland.net

OK I'm going to tell you about what I did first .
First of all my computer is a custom bulit system a PIII 933mhz .
I had alot of junk on my harddrive so I wanted to format my harddrive .
SO I put in this floppy disk I got from the place that put this PC together . ANd in MS-DOS I typed fdisk ,and and than I choose to delete the primary partition . And than I formatted the harddrive . Using the format c:/s .
And than ( some how) I installed Windows 3.1 .
Everything I think was right I also actived the partition .
But when I'd boot without the floppy disk all I'd get is a c: promhpt.
ANd when I boot with the start up floppy disk I'd get a windows '98 start up menu .
SO I tryed to do everything I did above over again .
ANd now when I type format c:/s
Its saying : Format not supported on Drive c: format terminated.
What did I do , Better yet what do I do now to fix it .
I have windows Me I'd like to install on here but I can't figure this out .
HELP!!

Help!!! I have a new hard drive and it booted ok. I installed Win95 on it, it is a 17.2 gig HD, but in Wind95 it says it is only a 2 gig. During the Boot up it shows to be a 17.2 gig. How do I solve this problem? Is there a partition that needs to be taken out?

If you are using any of the windows 95/98 you can type in format C: /c/s/u to do a clean sweep and get a clean load of the the new operating system but make sure you have first went and erased the partition via typing in the fdisk command at the A: and choose option 3 to delete the partition then back out all the way to A: and turn computer off then on boot up go back in and type in fdisk again and put in option 1 and create a new partition and after you have done that giving it the maximum of space on the hard drive back all the way out and shut it down agian then on boot up at A: type in format C: /c/s/u and put in yes when it say Proceed with format. If you are installing windows ME you just type in format C: /c/u and after it has formated type in scandisk/all and let it go threw a scandisk to check the drive for errors then it will ask if you want a surface scan choose yes to let it check for bad sectors and to reclaim them if it can if it can not it is a bad hard drive get a new one, after all this you can begin to l9oad your operating system.

My sister-in-law bought a rebuilt 486SX based computer. Its an Intel 486SX 25Mhz CPU.

The place that rebuilt it put in some version of DOS and "installed" windows 95 with internet explorer. The problem is her version of windows is 95 companion. She had problems accessing their version because she has no cd, they told me how to get her version installed. Now her computer freezes, wont hold commands and things just disappear. The only thing other than 95 she installed was her aol. Her computer runs very slow and she basically cant do much on it at all. I know how to reformat, but with her system I cant figure it out. Can someone help me? She has 20 MB 30 Pin Simms, 2.1 GB Hard drive, cirrus Logic super VGA Video, 33.6 modem, ALS100+ Sound card, creative CD rom drive,3-1/2" floppy & 5-1/4" floppy...her box reads Laser486SX. If any one can help....much thanks
