Comment: I just need to know how to overclock my AMD K6-2 350MHz for free. I have 192 megs SDRAM and a 7.42GB HD (or is it 7.46GB). I also have a RAGE LT PRO craphics crad, if it matters! My main goal is to get it where's I can play my favorite DirectX games w/o the cursor being so jumpy! I'd also like to figure out sum way 2 get my programs 2 load a little faster. (and mabye even get windows 2 load faster???) And BTW, I have Win98 FE ("First Edition" as I call it) And, no, I'm not gonna cough-up even one red cent to pay for any new hardware!

Reply: (edit)Haven't done it yet myself.....building a second unit.....but I found some helpful info on the Compaq support site.....seems most K6-2 systems use a common board......I'm assuming you have a 5000 series.....only real diffs are the dip switch settings and processors....secondarily are power supplies and things like drives.....there are lists of the voltage settings, fsb settings, etc. I don't think you can get a whole lot more out of them....maybe about 10%.....they're not like Athlons or Durons.....as for faster loading......I read a tweak that worked for me......start your computer in "safe mode"....R click on My Computer......select properties......select Device Manager....check out each device listed....if there are more than one instance of the device listed under each heading, delete all but the first one (the one the system is acutally using, I guess) Reboot. I did this and I was amazed! No amount of defragging and "scan disking" had the effect this had......system runs very smoothly now.......

Reply: (edit)On your MOBO you might find two sets of jumpers. One set is for your Bus Frequency and the other for your Multiplier. Try to set your Bus Frequency to equal that of your memory if possible (PC100? PC133?) and then jumper the multiplier. You might try 100MHz with a multiplier of 4 to give a CPU clock speed of 400MHz. I’ve overclocked an AMD K6 250MHz to 300MHz and I’ve had a K6 II 300MHz clocked up to 333MHz. I’ve tried overclocking this 400MHz K6 II to 450MHz but ran into some serious stability problems. You can get great advice on this in the CPUs/Overclocking forum.
