Send an email to yourself & if you get two in return, one without any subject, it's probably the W95.MTX virus.
If this is the case be prepared to format the hdd do a clean install.

This is most definitely the W95.MTX virus. Look for MTX_.exe on your system, if it's there, you've got the MTX virus. Go to http://housecall.antivirus.com .... you can do a free virus scan there. The MTX virus will not allow you to go to either Symantec's (Norton Anti-Virus) or to McAfee's sites to get the latest virus definitions.
For a quick fix (to just keep the virus from running on your machine and causing further corruption) delete the MTX_.exe file from your computer, and also run REGEDIT and do a search for "[matrix}" without the quotes. Delete the entire key.

This won't get rid of it, and you may also have some corrupted files on the computer. You shouldn't need to format the drive, however, as it mostly infects system files, which can later be extracted from the Windows CD using System File Checker (Start --> Run --> SFC) in Win98, or the EXTRACT command from DOS in Win95.

You may also want to look in your: start/run/msconfig for this file. I just had a virus not yet on the books and although I cleared the original virus, when I did it planted another .exe file in there at the bottom so try checking there.

Typo: "[matrix}" should be "[matrix]".
