Subject: How do I install win98 from external CDROM? |
Comment: I am trying to install win98 on an old computer without an internal CD-rom. I have formatted the hard drive and loaded DOS 6.2. My question is how do I install 98 from the external CD-rom. To do a full version installation, I need to format the hard drive again. But that would wipe out everything in C: drive and will the external CD-rom work? This is a Backpack External CD-rom with manufacturer¡¯s installation disk. I can install the driver in the hard drive, but for some reason, the computer is not seeing it. By default, the external CD-rom is assigned drive letter D:, but I already have two hard drives on this computer, C and D. Can I change the drive letter assignment in the command lines in autoexec.bat and config.sys? Thanks for all your help.

Reply: (edit)Sounds like you need your real-mode DOS access to CD-Rom fixed: edit your autoexec.bat. Go to the MSCDEX line. Then replace the /L:D with maybe /L:M.
