Subject: How Do I Get Rid of Windows 98?
Comment:

I just reformatted my hard drive then installed Windows 98 so I could install Windows 2000 off my upgrade CD. When I put the CD in it asked if I wanted to install using the same settings as 98 or a clean install. I thought it would completely remove 98 so I chose Clean Install. Apparantly Windows 98 is still there because when it reboots it comes up with: Please select the operating system to start

Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
Microsoft Windows

How do I make sure Windows 98 is completely gone from my machine and keep this startup menu from appearing?

If you formatted your Hd before installing 2000 then win98 IS gone. what happens if you select Microsoft Windows? You might try booting from 2000 boot disk and from the a: prompt type sys C: but im not sure if this will remove the nt bootloader or not.

Hi Len,

Thanks for your response. I only have the upgrade version of Windows 2000 so I had to install Windows 98 first.

I selected Microsoft Windows and it just went to a black DOS screen and just had a blinking cursur but nothing else (i.e. no c:\). Does this mean that Windows 98 isn't on the hard drive then? If so, how can I get rid of that screen and just have it load into Windows 2000 automatically?

The only problem with that is my friends laptop (the computer I reformatted) doesn't have a floppy drive.

Does anybody know how I can get to a command prompt in DOS since he doesn't have an A drive?

Just an FYI -

When installing an upgrade version, you don't need to have the previous version installed. When setup searches for a prior release, put the older install (prior version) in the CD, and point to it.

Len,

I'll try F8 after my computer is finished installing Service Pack 2.

I never really thought about trying to install the upgrade version without having a prior OS installed. Just to think that I've done this about 8 times and I'm just learning that now. :-)

When (if) I upgrade to Windows XP Business do you all recommend just buying the upgrade version? And just use my Windows 98 CD for verification or should I buy the full version? I'll need to buy two copies for both my computers.

if your previous OS exists on a recovery disk rather than a windows cd you must install the previous version to upgrade. WIndows setup wont regognize the recovery disk as qualifying software.

Try editing the boot.ini and remove the line:
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98"
and save. You should be able to just go to win 2000 at bootup and from there search for anything to do with windows 98.
Another thing is you can erase everthing, I mean everything, on drive c: from win2000, assuming win98 on c:,
and run the win2000 setup again placing it on the c: drive. Then from there you can erase the old win2000.
I know this sounds like the long way around but without a floppy drive.....
Hopefully everything is formatted FAT32.

In Windows 2000 under Startup options I turned off the option to boot with a startup menu. It now just boots right into windows.

I know Windows 98 is still installed because there is a Windows Directory in my C drive and it is 500 MBs. Windows 2000 is under C:\WINNT. How do I go about removing Windows 98? Can I just delete the folder? It is also showing in the list of operating systems to boot into under the Startup options.

I would go and reformat again but I spent all day yesterday adding all my friend's programs and files to his computer so that isn't an option.

Jeff,
I have my computer set up as a duel boot but with seperate dirves, c and d.
Tell me how the files are setup when you have both on the same drive letter, c:.
How can you distinguish between program files for win98 and win2000?
On win2000 there will be documents and settings, program files and winnt primary folders. If you can distinguish between the two program files you may be able to delete most of win98 without much trouble.
In the root c: directory may be another thing. I know that boot.ini, ntldr, ntdetect.com, pagefile.sys and setupdd.sys belongs to win2000 but the rest you will have to figure out.
I will do a little more searching to see what I can find out. it may be easier to start from scratch (reformat) ugh.

Thanks for your response. Just to let you know the answer, I posted my question in the MCSE forums and I was told to just delete the WINDOWS directory and remove 'Microsoft Windows' from the boot.ini file. I rebooted and didn't have any problems!

Windows 98 puts a WINDOWS directory on the C drive and Windows 2000 puts a WINNT directory. This is why I was able to delete the Windows 98 files without affecting 2000.
