How do I get rid of ie 5.5?

Comment:

Internet explorer 5.5 was too slow to
use, so I decided to try 5.01 again now
that I have MS Java Virtual Machine
installed (the only errors I had with it
before were scripting errors).

So, I went into the misnamed "add/remove
programs" utility, and it didn't have an
option to remove internet explorer, just
restore the previous version, but when I
selected that option, it couldn't do it.

I deleted the ie 5.5 folders, but ie 5.1
says it's still there, and won't install.
How do I finish getting rid of ie 5.5 or
convince 5.1 it's gone?

There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

LitePC is your answer. After removing IE, you can safely re-install an older version if you so desire.

You may want to consider Opera 6.x or 7.x as an alternative, given your specs, as it will run much better than any version of IE. I have found Opera's built-in Java to be much more reliable. You can have both browsers installed (and others) to see which you prefer.

The free IE radicator is the real answer. After removing IE, you can safely re-install any version you so desire.

But you are wrong about being too slow. 5.50 SP2 was/is the best ever IMO. 5.01 wasn't anything to write home about either. You can reinstall either version at any time as well which may have been what you should have done with ie 5.50 SP2 in the first place?

I assume you meant MSJAVA build 3810? Without it, you are too vunerable to trojans. Get it here (rename it to something a bit more managable). Read up on it here. You'll also want the latest 5.6 Windows Scripting Host for it's security updates too. Unfortunately, MS has pulled all 5.6 Script packages for 9x since 5.7 for XP and the like has come out so you'll have to get that here instead of at MS. 5.7 is NOT for 95 or 98.

Yes, your link is the more direct one. I was merely looking at the bigger picture, given that the OP is using a 486. Unfortunately the amount of RAM wasn't specified here, so I have to generalize on options.

I certainly wouldn't call the OP "wrong" about the perceived slowness, as it could be due to a number of possibilities, including browser exploits and other things we are not aware of. After all, we are talking about IE here, which is incredibly easy to cripple, so it's certainly conceivable that the previous IE installation was more stable, despite differences in versions.

Either way, I still stand by the Opera browser being a far more suitable browser choice on such specs, though. A Windows 95 machine with only Opera installed will generally perform better than one with only IE installed, especially on a 486. As for security between Java versions, you lay it out pretty well with your links. However, if security is a main concern, then it would still be wise to pick a more secure underlying browser, such as Opera in this case.

As for other options, Netscape Communicator 4.8 is yet another Java option for a 486. Yes, it's an old browser by today's standards, but strangely enough, I encounter some sites which run Java best in Netscape Communicator, while others run best in Opera. Since I do not know which site(s) the OP visits, it may be worth exploring different options. With multiple browsers installed, you can have each running its own version of Java, to see which works best for you.

I am using Opera 3.1 now and it's a peice of garbage. It doesn't even seem to be all that compatable with windows. I get "this program has performed an illegal operation" crashes *constantly*!

What no one seems to understand is I have already deleted ie 5.5. I didn't use Add/Remove Programs (it didn't have a remove otion for ie) or an uninstall program (couldn't find it in the folder - May have looked in the wrong place) I just deleted the folders I found it in.

The problem is ie 5.1 insists it's still there, and won't install itself.

I'd re-download 5.5, reinstall it and look for an uninstall program, and try again, but this Opera trash is to unstable for a download tha size.

So, how do I prove to ie 5.1 that 5.5 isn't there any more?

By the way I'm using a 486DX2-50Mhz with 20 Mb RAM (If that's not at least 80 times what I need the programmer should be shot) and yes ie 5.5 was too slow. It would probably work OK on the DX4-100 but it's broken. Opera 9.25 was so slow I might as well have been runing ie at 1 hz.

Opera 3.x is quite old. The version you have is likely to be intended for Windows 3.1. Try version 6.x or 7.x on your specs.

P.S. I have never had so much trouble logging into computing.net (with numerous browsers), so I hope this actually posts this time.

Your problem may be because of the flash ads on this site.
See this thread:

in particular response 15 - I have been using that ever since.

Actually it turned out to be something else, since I usually use less mainstream, non-shockwave flash / Java / Javascript browsers here, such as Lynx (which is why I haven't seen a pop-up or watermark anywhere on the web since 1998.) To make a long story short, it turns out computing.net was not sending cookies to some browsers, but WWW.computing.net would send them just fine. I sent Justin a PM, and it works now.
