Subject: How do I get boot disk 98 on CD
OS: Windows 98
CPU/Ram: 32
Comment:

After downloading the boot disk 98, what do I do next to burn it to a CD so my computer can read it and reboot my system? Don't have any floppy disks so I'm working with blank CD's and have Roxio Easy CD creator.

My boyfriend formatted my older computer and now it wont read the 98 boot disk. Tried bootdisk.com and other 98 disks. Can I get a bootdisk on CDROM and how do I do it?

I'll answer this post as it has a ~little~ more information than the previous one.

First, Please please don't don't double double post post.

"Don't have any floppy disks...."

Do you mean you don't have floppy media or do you mean you don't have floppy drives on your system(s)?

When you downloaded the bootdisk(s) file(s), did you run the downloaded file to *CREATE* a bootdisk, or did you just copy or download the file to a floppy? (Which sort of ties into my question above.)

Probably a waste of time Dan

If you get a boot disk on a CD, then what?

Bootdisk.com supplies the files zipped.
Win 98 can't read .zip files. From a working PC you can make a working boot disk.

If your BF is good at formatting, perhaps you should get him to fix this.... and no nookie till he does!

That's funny, Michael2!

If you had the bootdisk on a CD, it still wouldn't do you much good. You have to run the bootdisk first, in order to have access (drivers) to the CD ROM drive. So, it's a catch22 situation.

The only solution I can see, maybe, is to remove the hard drive and set it up in another, working, PC and do the install there. Then, just swap it back into your system. It would sure be a lot easier if you had a floppy drive, tho. I hope this helps.

PS. Be careful when you post a message. DON'T double click the POST button. It will send two posts out, and may even get you in trouble as a possible spammer. ( I hope that word doesn't get ME in trouble!)

Not so. If the machine bios allows booting from the cdrom drive, then a bootable cd will boot the machine. It's not hard to make a bootable cd, every burner software (that I know of) has the option to create such. It just needs to know where the boot files are in order to set it up.

You are correct, Dan. But looking at her specs, with 98 and only 32 of ram, I would think this is an older box, and probably doesn't support CD boot. Maybe I'm wrong. In that case, she needs to find someone, with a working floppy drive, to unzip the boot disk to a floppy, so as to have a working bootdisk floppy. Now, she needs to use a CD burner to make a bootable CD, with the bootdisk files on it. Voila!

Now, she can boot to the bootdisk CD, and run FDISK, Format, etc. getting her harddrive ready to install Win98. A working floppy would sure n\be nice, though. <G>

I Hope this helps.

You'll need to make the Boot CD on a PC that has both a floppy drive and a CD burner. Most of the bootdisk images that I've run across are self-extracting executable programs that (at best) will only give you an option of your A: drive or your B: drive. They have no provision for changing to any other drive (your CD burner).

Once you have a working bootdisk (on floppy) use Roxio to create the boot CD.

If you search google, you should be able to find a link to "Ultimate Boot CD". This should allow you to go directly to your CD burner, rather than requiring a floppy first.

HTH

Dave

My boyfriend formatted my older computer and now it wont read the 98 boot disk. Tried bootdisk.com and other 98 disks. Can I get a bootdisk on CDROM and how do I do it?
