First of all Sympatico's tech help line sucks like a Hoover deluxe.YOu can check your bandwith at http://www.computingcentral.com/topics/bandwidth/speedtest.asp One small factor is the quality of your phone line. The squeeching you hear when you connect is the handshake protocol, and this determines what speed you can connect at,if your out in the country the lines are not as good as in the city. Try bringing your system to your friends house and connect from ther and see what you get.Your problem may be a dirty phone line with too much noise to provide a good connection at a higher speed.
