Hi to you too,

With a home page like yours I would have thought you could figure this out yourself.

Anyway
First back up all your personal files.
Next close down Windows, to the DOS prompt.
Type format c:
You will be asked if you are sure or something like that.
Type y then Return.

You will need DOS and your CD-ROM driver loaded, in order to install W95.

One final point, you say that your HDD is causing problems, try running Scandisk from DOS, first, if it shows up any bad sectors, consider buying a new HDD, your old one is on its way out!

Good Luck
Phil

It's recomended if you have a > 650 Mb hard drive before you format it, use a startup disk with win95 because with the fdisk you can use FAT32 wich is more eficent.

Before you format your hard drive make sure you have the origional Windows 3.1 media. When you install from an upgrade version of Windows 95 it will ask you for the Windows 3.1 disk 1. Windows 98 asks for the first 7 disks. Also to run an new installation you can rename the Windows 3.1 directory (if you want the new Windows 95 diretory to be WINDOWS) and choose a diferent directory to install into and type C:\windows. This will install a fresh version of Windows 95 with no residue from the Windows 3.1. This will save reformating the hard drive. If your hard drive show's bad spots (using scandisk) you do need to consider replacing it.

To whom it may concern,

I have a computer at work that failed due to a fault in an HP scanner that corrupted several key files. I chose to format my hard drive and reinstall Windows 98, but the computer is so messed up that getting into Windows is impossible. I also cannot access the command prompt, I can only access Safe-mode command prompt (from Compaq).....I've tried every format command, but nothing works.....I know that a simple magnetic disk eraser would be easy and I hate how something so simple to do is so difficult! Any help on this matter (as quickly as possible) would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Michael S. Potter

I have a pc which has internal comflicts since brand new. Unfortunately it would not run Win95 and 3.11 has been used over the last 3-4 years.

I now have a new pc with Win98 and want to Format the hard drive on the old pc to install Win98.

Is there an 'idiots' gide to undertake this process?
I have tried using the terms FORMAT drive c: etc in various forms to no avail.
A friend of mine asked if I had F Disked it! Obviously the answer is no, since I am not sure what he means.

Can anyone help me please.

Frustrated

My hd is formatted. CD works. I'd like to copy the W95 cd onto my hard drive and then run setup from the hard drive. Problem is I try to copy the cd and it only copies the files in the root, but none of the directories or any of the files in thoes directories (or subdirectories). Didn't have much luck with the xcopy command either. Does anyone know how to copy the entire cd to the hard drive when the hard drive has just been formatted?
