If its a new drive you might need to partition it first. Is this the case?

Formating your hard drive is easy...need to
know a few things...do you have data you want
to save????...which operating system do you
have???...win 95, win 98, nt, dos.etc....
Are you installing your new OS with floppy
disks or with a cd????

You need to make a boot up floppy...If you
are in DOS...go to the C:\ prompt and type
"format a:/s"...this will put the system
files, msdos.sys, io.sys and command.com on
your floppy...with these 3 files you can
always boot a pc from the floppy drive...
You need another file if you want to use the
CD drive to install the OS after your
re-format...that file is "mscdex.exe"...this
is the file that makes the cd-rom work...If
you are using Win95 now...go to start/find
and type in "mscdex.exe" in the window and do
a search...you will find it...drag and drop
it to your floppy, or copy it to your
floppy...you now have 4 files on your
floppy...Find 2 more files, "format.exe" and
"fdisk.exe" using the same procedure...This
gives you a total of 6 files on your
floppy...
Put the floppy in the A drive and turn your
pc on...when you get the A:\ prompt, type in
"fdisk" and go to #4, then #3, then #1 to
partition it as one whole disk as a primary
DOS partition...After that is done type in
"format c:/s"...this will format your hd and
transfer the 3 system files I already
mentioned to your C drive....re boot...then
copyt the mscdex.exe from the A drive to the
C: drive....reboot and you will now boot up
into the C drive and it will access your
cd-rom which will be D: drive...then transfer
your OS per

G'day me,you again?, Well if ya go to the How To section [advanced] at this site there is a text file on the subject, as for some of Steve's advice it is back to front, you start at [1],[2],[3] and [4] is just to display what drives you have after partitioning and as for Mscdex.exe, if you drag it into a floppy check to make sure it is NOT a shortcut, I'm not saying it won't be but double check. And also you have to install your Cd-rom drivers after mscdex.exe is copied to C:, make sure you have these as well before you start. Also make sure you have your ProductID number [on CD case] or we will be seeing you again, without this, zilch.

Sorry Steve, I had to correct you, but at least you mentioned Mscdex.exe, a lot forget that one.

And as for Mean Mr. Mustard's advice, don't bother!!!

My apologies to Me and Steve, I was slightly wrong, when you open Fdisk you will get a menu with 4 choices [5 if you have 2 or more HD's] and you select 1 [create partition] and then a new menu with another 3 choices pops up and follow steps 1,2,3, but you may be forced to reboot [leave boot disc in]after the first partition and then proceed with 2 and 3. Hope that cleared that up, now I can go back to sleep [nilly 4 a.m. down here].

Once again my apologies but I'm glad I sorted it before anyone else did, whew!
