I need some help.

I upgraded my old Compaq Presario 5528 to the following specs and let my kids use it:
Win 98SE
AMD K6-2 450Mhz (runs 6x66 MHz and I use Powerleap adapter)
72 MB RAM
40 GB 7200 rpm Western Digital HD
Promise ISA card with a translation-ROM for the support of the above HD

I had numerous issues with this system including HD dying and needing to be replaced.

Recently, I cannot boot the system, even from several diffrent bootable discs (win98, DOS, Western Digital bootable floppy, Compaq diagnostic disc etc.) Boots only from Norton rescue disk, but it is useless becouse the disc is old and made under Win95. So, the floppy drive works, as well RAM, ROM, and CPU (I am not so sure about HD, but no way to check). I suspect my kids messed up setup while computer was starting, but i do not know for sure.

I am somewhat computer literate, and had a number of hardware/sotware problems resolved by myself in the past, but this is beyond me. I cannot understand why you could not boot from a bootable disc (at least some of them).

Anybody please?

Thanks,
Jacek

Do you have your BIOS set so that the Floppy drive is first in your boot sequence. It could be that you have the CD-Rom set first instead.

Could be a flaky floppy drive. Try cleaning the heads.

Hi everyone,
Jacek, if you suspect your kids to have messed many things in the Setup, I would suggest to go back to the initial state! there's an option to do that!

Thanks for suggestions.
Nice tries, but did not help.
Frienchie,
I wish I could do this, but the way some Compaq computers were made, thay had BIOS software on HD, when I replaced HD, I don't have that anymore. I have BIOS utilities on a bootable floppy, but this does not work anymore. Some floppies work, so A: drive is OK. I suspect that this may be a weird HD issue. I need to remove ISA card and swap HD to test this.
Thanks everybody.
