Reply: (edit)Ah, another writer of 'blank verse' - it's easier to read your post if you don't insert arbitrary line breaks Safe Mode? HJT! does in fact work under Win95 - despite not explicitly syaing so, many apps will still function as intended. Ad-aware also works (just not its installer) Also try clearing away Temporary files - CCleaner is good for that too Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Reply: (edit)The colors have to do with the display adapter drivers. These have to be "upgraded" from the stock windows VGA. Why can't you load 98? Try deleting the bad se.dll file in raw dos. Note it's location. Shut down. Restart the system. Just after the POST screen (Power On Self Test) start tapping either the Ctrl or F8 key. You should get the MS Startup menu. Choose Command Prompt Only. Navigate to the directory where the file resides. You'll have to use the dos filename convention. Example, if the file is in c:\program files\bad file directory name\se.dll, you'd have to add ~1 after the sixth character of every long name, discounting spaces. So it would be like this; cd progra~1\badfil~1\se.dll (cd = change directory) Once there, type in; deltree se.dll and hit Y to confirm the deletion. If you want to load 98, and you have the CD and Product Key, post back. It's a good day when you learn something

Reply: (edit)SE.DLL (running from a temp folder) is often associated with the dreaded 'about:blank' mess - HJT! might well be advisable Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Reply: (edit)I've always seen it in windows\temp and removed it in dos, as Dan mentions. But doing it in safe mode should work also. For dos, as mentioned above, use F8 when booting or shutdown windows and choose to restart in msdos mode. Then at the prompt type del c:\windows\temp\se.dll and enter.

Reply: (edit) Ive tried I think all the solutions here (in the March 2005 posts) to get rid of this se.dll and the sp files and it keeps coming back.. Maybe Ive missed something?? Using WINDOWS 98 SE with Internet explorer.. any comments from W98 users would be appreciated on how to get completely rid of this thing.. Been troubled with this for 5 days and it's causing me to be unable to run some of my programs as well.. My spybot and pest patrol see it and supposedly delete it but it comes back.. Been in the registry and the temp file and got rid of it but it comes back in about 5 to 10 minutes after I delete it.. thanks! Norm

Reply: (edit)The anti-malware programs I've used haven't been able to remove it but that's just because windows won't allow you to delete a file that's running. And I think everytime you do an 'end task' it just restarts. Doing it in dos or safe mode should work OK. Every now and then when I get infected I'll notice several .exe and .dll files have been downloaded to the windows and sometimes the windows\system folders. The file date and time of those files will be when they got downloaded. This is different from legitimate files that'll have the date and time of their original creation. And because I know what's supposed to be there I'll just exit to dos and delete them. You have to be careful doing this since windows will update files when it shuts down, although I don't think it 'updates' any dll or exe files. It's a good idea also to familiarize yourself with what's listed in your msconfig--startup. All of this malware will show up there also. So if you check it and there's new things listed there you may have been attacked. It'd be a good idea to download and run CWShredder. It should remove the sp.dll files.

Reply: (edit)Well, I had several times probelm with the se.dll I clean it and it always come up again later on. I am writing this in case there has been No solution for this matter. To remove the se.dll: First of all you need this > ListDlls (www.sysinternals.com) its easy to find. Close all running programs and run this tool in ms-dos prompt. It will list all running programs with their related files (dlls, ini e.c.) Normaly you will see the Explorer.exe with the used dlls, the Taskmon.exe with its running dlls e.c. It most of these programs (especialy at the taskmon.exe) you might see a running file (not specific a dll, in my case it was a .pkt and some other tijme an .ini) which file will not have any Version or other info about it. Write down the name and search it in your c:\windows directory. In windows search, or in the directory it will probably not be found. It you can't find it, write in ms-dos promt: c:\dir "the name of the file" e.x. if the file has a name msdfmyp.ini (like i had) then write in c:\windows dir msdfmyp.ini It will appear!!! You can not delete it or modify it or read it. It is well protected and hiden. You can not remove it even in safe mode. This file is the real virus. It starts when windows start and it creates the se.dll along with an other dll with random name in the system folder. It usualy uses the taskmon to do this. At first I reistalled the mstask. But lately I found that you just have to do this: Shut down your computer. When it starts press the ctrl to move to the start up selections and choose "Command promt only". (for XP use a start up disk) Doing this, the hiden file that runs at start up, will not be running and you will be able to delete it using the dos commands. e.x. for the above file I had (msdfmyp.ini) I just did: del c:\windows\msdfmyp.ini and it was gone. You should do this for the file you found as I explaned above (with ListDlls). I restarted my computer and the system indicated a missing file error at Rundll. The missing gile was the one I just deleted. I did a restart again, run the ListDlls tool, and all programs (explorer.exe, taskmon.exe e.c.) did not had this strange file any more. The se.dll does not appear FOR EVER). Hope this was helpfull and the se.dll will be just a bad dream in the future. John
